Mycelial Threading

Lore: Mycelial Threading
The study of Mycelial Threading is the academic and spiritual discipline of interpreting the vast, bio-electric impulses of the Omnisporangium (known in elder tongues as Mycelia-Zul). While surface scholars in the Steamfort laboratories view it as a form of seismic geomancy, the Sub-Terran Accord and the Aether-Weaver Goblins understand it as a communion with the planetary mind. Threading allows a practitioner to "listen" to the tectonic shifting of Aethervale, translating the groan of shifting plates and the hum of Aether crystals into actionable data.
In the current era, Threading has taken on a frantic urgency. The discipline has identified a rhythmic biological clock ticking beneath the crust: the Equilibrium Cycle. Every 17 years, the Omnisporangium initiates a planetary rebalancing—a catastrophic "harvest" designed to prune surface stagnation.
"The world does not speak in words, child; it speaks in tremors and spores. If you listen with your skin, you will hear the song of the deep. To thread is to become a single stitch in the tapestry of the Titan."
— Grand Shaman Glokk
The Origin
Historical records recovered from the Deep-Strands and the quiet archives of Thorne’s Library suggest that Mycelial Threading was first practiced by the First Brood—the ancient "Sleeping Dragons"—to monitor the health of the world while they slumbered. These records hint that previous rebalancings were responsible for ancient cataclysms, such as the Great Flood of the First Age recorded in Muridae myth. As these dragons retreated into the crust, the mantle of custodianship fell to the subterranean kobolds of the Sub-Terran Accord.
In the early eras of Aethervale, Threading was purely instinctual. However, with the rise of the Steam Wrights Consortium and the industrialization of magic, the practice evolved into a hybrid science. Modern "Threaders" now utilize copper resonance-rods and Aether-tuned brass goggles to amplify the telepathic echoes of the fungal god, attempting to map the Omnisporangium’s emotional state as if it were a weather pattern.
The Cicadan Swarm & Sensory Hijacking
The most terrifying discovery of modern Threading is the nature of the Sighing Sickness. Threaders have realized that the subterranean flow of Blue Bile acts as a reactive chemical catalyst, priming the neural pathways of giants and trolls for rapid environmental adaptation.
This is not crude mind control, but a sophisticated "Sensory Hijacking." The bile alters the host’s perception, making the industrial roar of cities like Steamfort feel like a physical wound to the host. Consequently, the infected giant-kin—now known as Whisper-Hulks—act with a pseudo-coordinated defensive maneuver, believing their violent "pruning" of surface civilizations is a matter of personal survival. This 17-year emergence, the Cicadan Swarm Genesis, is the Omnisporangium’s way of processing "broken" surface elements back into the earth.
Current Impact
In the modern age, Mycelial Threading is the only defense against the increasing instability of the planet. Practitioners are employed by mining syndicates to predict "Blue Bile" eruptions and by the Ironbeard Syndicate to locate rich veins of Aether Crystals.
More critically, Threading has revealed the "Immune Response" of the planet. It is through this discipline that scholars realized the Floating Garden Plight and the descent of the Sky-Islands were the Omnisporangium actively pulling mass toward the core to seal catastrophic ruptures. Without Threaders, the surface world would have no warning of the "World-Fire" currently being stoked by the Obsidian Scale, nor the impending arrival of the Swarm.
Rumors & Whispers
- The Dragon’s Heartbeat (True): It is whispered among the high-ranking members of the Sub-Terran Accord that a master Threader can actually locate the exact chambers of the Sleeping Dragons by harmonizing with the Mycelium’s protective casing around them.
- The Spore-Puppet Fallacy (False): Surface-dwellers often fear that Mycelial Threaders are being slowly mind-controlled by the Omnisporangium to sabotage industrial machinery. In reality, the "sabotage" is usually a Threader attempting to shut down a machine that is causing a localized tectonic collapse or "Aether-Scald" to the planetary mind.
Markings
In the tunnels of the Deep-Strands and the Dal-Dur mines, Threaders often leave rhythmic scratches in the rock to guide those who follow.
- The Three-Leaf Coil: A spiral with three protruding notches.
- Translation: "Aether pressure is high; the earth is dreaming deeply here. Do not use explosives."
KEY NPC: Grand Shaman Glokk
Grand Shaman Glokk is the prophetic leader of the Aether-Weaver Goblins. An Aether crystal is embedded directly into his skull, serving as a permanent antenna to the fungal network.
Ideals & Flaws
- Ideal (Preservation): "The Titan must survive, even if the fleas upon its back must perish to ensure it."
- Flaw (Alien Perspective): Glokk finds it difficult to empathize with individual suffering, often viewing a village's destruction as a "necessary scab" for the planet.
KEY NPC: Pip the Sun-Spore
A timid half-goblin whose anomalous physiology has made him the most important living being in Aethervale. His low-acid stomach incubated a hybrid miracle: the Eclipse Sun-Spore Seed.
"I didn't mean to eat the magic seeds... I was just hungry. But now the ground keeps humming lullabies to me, and I think it's asking for a snack."
Ideals & Flaws
- Ideal (Innocence): "Everyone deserves a chance to grow, even the big scary things under the dirt."
- Flaw (Cowardice): Pip’s first instinct is to hide in his shell (or any available barrel), often at the most inconvenient times.
FEATURED LOCATION: The Bile-Ducts of Olsa
A network of pressurized, calcified conduits that serve as the "circulatory system" for the Omnisporangium’s purifying fluids.
Sight, Sound, and Smell
- Sight: Massive, translucent pipes pulse with a rhythmic blue glow, illuminating the humid tunnels in flickering neon intervals.
- Sound: The deafening, hydraulic hiss of high-pressure bile moving through stone valves, underlying a constant, low-frequency heartbeat.
- Smell: The overwhelming scent of copper and ammonia, clashing with the sickly-sweet aroma of blooming night-fungus.
FEATURED MONSTER: Whisper-Hulk
Large Monstrosity (Giant-kin), Neutral A giant or troll transformed by Blue Bile, its skin overgrown with thick, ivory-colored mycelium that acts as organic plate armor.
Tactics
Whisper-Hulks act as biological valves. They use their Seismic Displacement to shift the battlefield, pushing enemies into caustic bile-pools. When damaged, they release Bioluminescent Smog, heavily obscuring the area while granting the Hulk "Tremorsense." They prioritize destroying sources of high-frequency noise, such as steam engines or thunder-based spells.
Ecology
Whisper-Hulks are the "white blood cells" of the Equilibrium Cycle. They are created when Aether-Weaver Goblins sting giant-kin with concentrated bile. Driven mad by the heat of surface "Aether-Scald," they retreat to the cool Bile-Ducts to serve as sentinels until the 17-year timer triggers their ascent to the surface.
FEATURED ITEM: The Resonating Monocle
Wondrous Item, Rare (Requires Attunement) A brass-cased monocle with a lens carved from a sliver of Pure Aether.
Lore & Origin
Originally designed by Professor Valerius before his defection to the Obsidian Scale, these monocles were intended to help miners see "invisible" fractures in the rock. However, users soon discovered the monocles allowed them to see the glowing "threads" of the Mycelium pulsing through the stone, effectively granting them the ability to track the flow of magical energy through the earth itself.
Mechanics (5e)
While wearing this monocle, you have advantage on Wisdom (Survival) checks to navigate underground and Intelligence (Investigation) checks to identify magical traps or Aether-based machinery. Once per day, you can cast Detect Magic, but it only reveals sources of magic within stone or earth.
FEATURED ITEM: Eclipse Sun-Spore Seed
Wondrous Item, Legendary A shimmering, multi-chromatic seed that pulses with both radiant sunlight and bioluminescent twilight.
Lore & Origin
Born from Pip the Sun-Spore's unique internal chemistry, these seeds are the only flora capable of purging the Omnisporangium's infection. They act as "harmonic stabilizers," capable of communicating the value of mortal life to the hivemind. To function, they must be planted in the Nursery of the Eclipse Bloom, where a crust fracture allows direct sunlight to temper their volatile core.
Mechanics (5e)
As an action, the seed can be crushed to release a 30-foot aura of Hallow. Within this aura, creatures are immune to the "Fungal Bloom" status effect and the "Sensory Hijacking" of the Omnisporangium. If planted in a ley-line node, the seed can permanently pacify any Spore-Goliaths or Whisper-Hulks within a 1-mile radius.
