The Glittering Fungus

The Glittering Fungus

The Glittering Fungus

Location: Dal Dur, The Ironbeard Syndicate Deep-Mines Level Range: 2-4 Tone: High Fantasy Steampunk (Industrial, Wondrous, and Tense)

Background & Objective

In the brass-rimmed deeps of Dal Dur, the rhythmic hissing of pneumatic drills has been replaced by an eerie, shimmering silence. A rare and vibrant bloom of "Glow-Cap" mushrooms—a localized manifestation of the world-spanning Omnisporangium—has erupted within Shaft 4. The Ironbeard Syndicate initially dismissed the bloom as a minor infestation, but the miners have begun returning to the surface with glazed eyes, holding whispered conversations with their pickaxes and raving about the "breath of the world."

The party is commissioned by Venda 'Sporelung', a mutated merchant who breathes Blue Bile, to harvest the high-potency spores for her "Deep-Delve" concoctions. However, as the party descends, they find the situation is no longer a simple harvest. The fungus is actively migrating toward subterranean fractures leaking Blue Bile—the caustic, magical waste of the planet’s internal cooling system. By clogging these fissures with crystalline mycelium, the fungus acts as a desperate, brittle seal against a toxic catastrophe.

The Objective: Harvest the spores while deciding the fate of the mine. To clear the fungus is to reclaim the gold but risk a Blue Bile rupture; to leave it is to surrender the shaft to the fungal god’s "immune system."

The Gimmick: Hallucinogenic Spores

The air in Shaft 4 is thick with a shimmering, copper-tasting mist.

  • Aetheric Echoes: Characters within the fungus-infested zones must succeed on a DC 12 Constitution saving throw at the start of their turn or suffer the Confused status effect for 1 round as they witness "The Mycelial Threading"—visions of the planet’s nervous system.
  • Shifting Geography: The hallucinations cause the map to warp. On initiative count 20, the DM may slide one terrain feature (a wall, a crate, a stalagmite) 10 feet in any direction. This is a sensory illusion, but to the affected player, the path is physically blocked or opened.

Key NPCs

Venda 'Sporelung'

"Don't mind the wheezing, darling. It’s just the Blue Bile keeping my lungs from turning to stone. Now, fetch those spores before the world decides to breathe back."

  • Ideals: Sustainability. The deep-veins must be protected from both greed and the Void.
  • Flaws: Addicted. She is physically dependent on the very toxins she helps contain.

Overseer Horgar Ironbeard

"I don't care if the mushrooms are singing the Dwarven National Anthem; they're sitting on four tons of high-grade Aether-quartz!"

  • Ideals: Industry. Progress is the only way to keep the Steamfort engines turning.
  • Flaws: Short-Sighted. He ignores ecological warnings in favor of immediate profit.

Rumors & Whispers

  • True: The fungus isn't trying to kill the miners; it’s trying to keep the "World-Fire" from leaking through the cracks in the mine floor.
  • False: The spores are a biological weapon engineered by the Sub-Terran Accord kobolds to drive the dwarves out of Dal Dur.

Sensory Details: Sight, Sound, and Smell

  • Sight: A vibrant, pulsing azure glow that clings to the brass pipes and copper gears of the mine. Shimmering spores dance in the air like microscopic fireflies.
  • Sound: The rhythmic hiss of escaping steam punctuated by a low, melodic thrumming that seems to vibrate in the players' marrow—the heartbeat of the Omnisporangium.
  • Smell: A sharp, metallic tang of copper mixed with the heavy, sweet scent of rotting peaches and ancient earth.

Markings & Warnings

The miners have scratched frantic signs into the iron support beams to guide those who still have their wits. One recurring marking is a circle with three jagged lines pointing downward.

  • Translation: "The Bile rises; the fungus holds. Do not break the seal."

Tactical Combat & Ecology

Spore-Servant Zombies

These are not traditional undead, but miners whose nervous systems have been hijacked by the Mycelium to act as "Deep-Strand" guardians.

  • Tactics: Spore-servants do not fight to kill; they fight to expel. They use Shoving actions to push players away from the "Bile-Seals" (the largest mushroom clusters). If a Spore-servant is reduced to 0 HP, it explodes in a Puffball Burst, forcing a DC 12 Con save against the Hallucinogenic Spores in a 10-foot radius.

Ecology

The Glittering Fungus is a "Planetary Immune Response." It feeds on Aether Crystals but is irresistibly drawn to Blue Bile leaks. It transmutes the toxic bile into a hardened, crystalline resin. This creates a parasitic but stabilizing relationship with the mine: the deeper the miners dig (releasing more toxins), the faster the fungus grows to compensate.

Lore & Items: The Spora-Calyx

Lore & Origin: The first Spora-Calyx was allegedly gifted by the Aether-Weaver Goblins to a surface-dweller who saved an Aether nursery. It is a brass-encased lantern containing a living, humming Glow-Cap. It is said that those who carry it can hear the "Dissonant Heartbeat" of the world, warning them of tectonic shifts moments before they occur.

Item Properties: While the lantern is lit, the bearer has advantage on saving throws against being Frightened or Confused by fungal effects. Additionally, the bearer can cast Detect Magic at will, but only to sense Aether or Blue Bile.

Narrative Outcomes & Loot

  • The Preservationist Path: If the party helps Venda stabilize the bloom without destroying the seals, they earn the favor of the Sub-Terran Accord and receive a Pure Aether Crystal (worth 500gp or usable as a crafting component).
  • The Industrialist Path: If the party clears the shaft for Overseer Horgar, they are rewarded with a Steam-Powered Grappling Hook and significant political favor with the Ironbeard Syndicate, though Venda warns them that "the earth will remember this theft."
  • The Twist: Regardless of the choice, the players discover a Deep-Strand Sentinel—a kobold construct—watching them from the shadows, recording their actions for Grand Warren-Master Zik-Zik.
