The Crystal Embargo

The Crystal Embargo of Lemmion
Level Range: 1-5 Tone: High Fantasy & Steampunk Setting: The Borderlands of Kigum and the Forests of Lemmion
Background & Objective
The floating towers of Kigum—shimmering marvels of brass and glass—hang precariously over the world of Aethervale. These spires and their intricate arcane wards are powered by Primal Aether crystals harvested from the ancient forests of Lemmion. However, the equilibrium of the world is shifting. Matriarch Sylas Moonsong has declared a total embargo, claiming Kigum’s over-extraction is poisoning the forest.
The crisis is more than political; it is planetary. Without these crystals, Kigum’s Aether-grid will fail, and the High Spire will literally fall from the sky. The party is hired by House Elara to travel to Lemmion, negotiate a resolution, and investigate the "unnatural corruption" the elves are reporting. Unbeknownst to the surface world, the Omnisporangium—the god-like fungal network beneath the crust—has activated its planetary immune system, and the "corruption" is actually a desperate attempt by the planet to heal itself.
Key NPCs & Motivations
Matriarch Sylas Moonsong
The ruler of Lemmion and High Druid of the Circle of the Thorn. She is a regal figure draped in living ivy and shimmering silk.
"The forest’s blood is not a commodity for your floating toys; Lemmion will not bleed so Kigum may fly."
Ideals & Flaws
- Ideal (Preservation): The natural balance of Aethervale must be maintained at any cost to mortal civilization.
- Flaw (Isolationist): Her deep connection to the forest makes her susceptible to the whispers of those who claim to speak for the wild, leading her to ignore the technological needs of others.
High Enchanter Valerius
A Kigum traditionalist and representative of the cutthroat House Valerius. He views magic as a resource to be tamed by copper and gear.
"Progress demands fuel. If the elves will not sell the spark, we shall harvest the fire ourselves."
Ideals & Flaws
- Ideal (Expansion): Kigum is the pinnacle of civilization and must be preserved to lead Aethervale into a new age.
- Flaw (Arrogance): He treats the world as a machine to be repaired, failing to realize the planet is a living entity that can fight back.
Xylira the Emerald Watcher
A Green Dragon who has long acted as a guardian of Lemmion. She secretly understands the Omnisporangium’s benevolent purpose and manipulates the Matriarch to enforce the embargo, acting as a surface-level enforcer for the subterranean god.
"Mortals see a cough and call it a plague; I see the world's lungs gasping for air."
Ideals & Flaws
- Ideal (Harmony): Protecting the planetary wards and the sleeping "First Brood" is her sacred charge.
- Flaw (Manipulative): She views humanoids as short-sighted children and has no qualms about using lies to guide them toward "proper" behavior.
The Setting: The Whispering Grove & Beyond
The Silver Exchange (Kigum)
A district of brass pipes and elegant stone where riots have broken out due to failing wards.
Sight, Sound, and Smell
- Sight: Shimmering blue sparks leaping from dying streetlamps; copper gears grinding to a halt in mid-air.
- Sound: The constant, rhythmic hissing of escaping steam mixed with the angry shouting of displaced citizens.
- Smell: The sharp, metallic scent of ozone and hot copper, underlying the faint smog of industrial exhaust.
The Verdant Canopy (Lemmion)
The elven capital, a sprawling city of bridges woven from Heart-Trees.
Sight, Sound, and Smell
- Sight: Vibrant, bioluminescent moss crawling up ancient bark; grand bridges made of living, woven vines.
- Sound: The mythic, shimmering chime of Aether-breezes through crystalline leaves.
- Smell: The rich, noble scent of pine needles, damp earth, and ancient magic.
Aetheric Node 01
A massive extraction site where crystals once grew like wheat. It is now a site of "desperate cosmic surgery."
Sight, Sound, and Smell
- Sight: Massive, pulsing purple "Aether-parasites" (Mycelial growths) clinging to the extraction drills; glowing Blue Bile dripping into the soil.
- Sound: A low, rhythmic thumping, like a subterranean heartbeat, vibrating through the soles of one's boots.
- Smell: The sweet, cloying scent of fermenting fruit and ozone.
Rumors & Whispers
- True Rumor: The floating towers of Kigum aren't failing because of a lack of power alone; the Omnisporangium is actively pulling them down to use their mass to seal a crust rupture.
- False Rumor: The Circle of the Thorn is using the embargoed crystals to build a "Light-Bomb" to wipe Kigum off the map.
Markings
- The Spore-Sigil: A series of five dots arranged in a circle with a single line trailing downward, scratched into the brass of the extraction drills.
- Translation: "The Great Breath returns; let the metal rot."
Encounters & Branching Paths
- The Diplomatic Parley (Social): Players must navigate elven etiquette within the Verdant Canopy. Success depends on recognizing that the Matriarch’s "stubbornness" is actually a response to the forest's genuine pain.
- The Parasite Purge (Combat/Challenge): Descending into Node 01, the party encounters Bile-Mutated Trolls. They must decide whether to destroy the "Heart-Growth" (which helps Kigum but harms the planet) or use Mycelial Threading to redirect the energy.
- The Saboteur’s Trail (Investigation): Players find evidence that The Gear Grinders of Steamfort have been sabotaging the nodes with pneumatic drills to frame the elves. This is a move to force Kigum to buy Steamfort's mechanical tech, fueled by the Steam Wrights Consortium.
- The Dragon’s Influence (Social/Combat): Xylira confronts the party. If they can prove they are working to heal the planet (and not just exploit it), she may become an ally. If they attack, they face her spectral avatar.
Monsters: Spore-Goliath (Guardian of the Node)
These are necro-mycological siege engines—dead forest guardians reanimated by the Omnisporangium to dismantle industrial structures.
Tactics
The Spore-Goliath targets constructs and metallic armor first, using its Raking Vines to strip away mechanical defenses. It releases a Blue Bile Cloud (15ft radius) that forces a Constitution save or causes a Wild Magic surge in the victim.
Ecology
Spore-Goliaths are not born; they are "knotted" together by the Mycelium when a leylines is threatened. They dissolve into harmless compost once their task of dismantling artificial machinery is complete.
Narrative Outcomes & Loot
- Success (The Aether-Blight Accord): The party exposes the Steamfort saboteurs and convinces Kigum to adopt sustainable "Mycelial Threading." Kigum remains afloat, and the forest begins to heal.
- Success (The Iron Fist): The party helps Valerius secure the nodes by force. Kigum has power, but the forest is scarred. This triggers the Omnisporangium to send Spore-Goliaths against Kigum in the near future.
Items
Whisper-Strike Longbow Weapon (longbow), rare (requires attunement)
- Lore & Origin: Carved from a branch of the first Heart-Tree, this bow was gifted to the Wardens of Lemmion to strike down those who would silence the forest's song. It hums with a faint, shimmering light when held by the noble of heart.
Aether-Saver Medal Wondrous item, uncommon
- Lore & Origin: Forged by House Elara during the Great Mana Drought, these copper medals are stamped with the seal of Kigum. They are granted to heroes who preserve the city’s Aether-grid.
- Effect: Grants a 10% discount on all magical services and items in Kigum.
Casket of Historical Artifacts Wondrous item, rare
- Lore & Origin: A brass-bound chest containing relics of the "First Brood"—ancient dragons who once slept beneath the world. The artifacts include calcified scales and copper scrolls detailing the "World-Fire." High Enchanter Valerius seeks these to further House Valerius's influence.
