The Acorn Guard

The Acorn Guard
The Acorn Guard is the primary military force of the Briar-Kin and the protectors of the upper canopy within The Shrouded Boughs. Tasked with defending the Mousefolk’s tree-cities from avian predators, rival clans, and curious outsiders, they are renowned for their agility, precision, and their unique bond with the giant insects of the forest.
Philosophy & Goals
The Guard's motto is "Watch Above, Protect Below." They believe that the safety of the entire Muridae society depends on their ability to control the heights. While the Mist-Weaver Coven hides the forest from the world, the Acorn Guard ensures that nothing that does find the Boughs survives the encounter. They are pragmatic and disciplined, often serving as a counter-balance to the more mystical and insular Coven.
Structure & Leadership
The Guard is organized into "Flights," each responsible for a specific sector of the canopy. They are led by the Grand Warden, who coordinates the defense of the Crown City of Ardor.
- Grand Warden Hekka: A battle-scarred veteran who lost an eye to a giant gull. She is a master of the needle-rapier and a strict disciplinarian.
- Flight-Leader Pippin: A charismatic young officer known for his daring leaf-kite maneuvers and his bond with a massive, iridescent stag-beetle named "Thunder."
- Master-at-Arms Bree: Responsible for the forging and maintenance of the Guard's specialized equipment, including shell-bucklers and aether-tipped harpoons.
Combat Tactics & Equipment
The Acorn Guard specializes in high-speed, vertical combat.
- Beetle-Cavalry: Many guardsmen ride trained giant beetles, using them as living tanks to charge across branches or as stable platforms for archery.
- Leaf-Kites: In cases where beetle-mounts are unavailable, guardsmen use grass-woven kites to glide between branches, performing devastating drop-attacks on their enemies.
- Equipment: Their primary weapon is the needle-rapier—a long, thin blade designed for precise strikes against the weak points of thick insect carapaces or bird feathers. They also utilize spore-bombs to disorient or paralyze foes.
Interactions & Influence
The Acorn Guard is the most visible faction in the Boughs and maintains a positive, protective relationship with the common Muridae. However, they are increasingly concerned by the arrival of Pirate Lords and explorers from the Aethervale mainland, leading them to ramp up their patrols and establish more Gull-Watch Towers along the forest’s edge.
