The Shrouded Boughs

The Shrouded Boughs

Overview & Aesthetic

The Shrouded Boughs is a hidden, unmapped archipelago located in the far reaches of the Boundary Ocean. To most sailors, it appears as nothing more than a bank of eternal, impenetrable fog that has claimed many foolish ships. However, beneath the mist lies a sprawling mangrove forest of titanic proportions. Colossal trees, their trunks hundreds of feet in diameter, rise from the salt-crusted waters, their interlocking branches forming a dense canopy that perpetually traps a thick, magically-infused mist at sea level.

The environment is one of vertical extremes: the sun-drenched, vibrant world of the upper canopy and the dark, eerie, and damp labyrinth of the root-system below.

History & Lore

For centuries, the Boughs remained a mystery to the "Tall Races." It was only with the advent of advanced aether-stabilizers that explorers from the Aethervale mainland began to hear rumors of a small, thriving civilization living within the fog. According to Muridae legends, the Boughs were created by the Mist-Weaver as a sanctuary from the Great Flood of the First Age. The mist is not merely a natural phenomenon but a living barrier that reacts to the presence of outsiders, thickening and shifting to protect the secrets of the forest.

Environmental Hazards / Mechanics

  • The Eternal Mist: Perception checks involving sight are made with disadvantage at root-level. Navigating without a Mist-Whisker guide requires a DC 16 Survival check.
  • Verticality: Falling from the canopy is almost certainly fatal unless a leaf-kite or gliding spell is used.
  • Strangle-Vines: Aggressive, sentient vines that inhabit the middle layers of the forest, attempting to grapple anything that moves too slowly.
