Mousefolk (The Muridae)

The Mousefolk, known among themselves as the Muridae, are a diminutive and exceptionally resilient race that inhabits the most secluded corners of Aethervale. While they can be found in small numbers within the major cities of the Northern Continent, the heart of their culture lies within the mist-shrouded mangroves of The Shrouded Boughs. Gifted with keen senses and an innate ability to thrive in environments that would overwhelm larger races, the Muridae have developed a complex, symbiotic society split between the heights of the canopy and the depths of the misty roots.

The Two Kinships

The Muridae are divided into two primary cultural groups, each adapted to a specific layer of their arboreal home:

The Briar-Kin

The Briar-Kin are the acrobats of the canopy. Living hundreds of feet above the water, they make their homes in suspended grass-woven huts and hollowed-out branches. They are masters of vertical movement, using leaf-kites to glide between trees and riding giant trained beetles to traverse the dangerous gaps in the upper foliage. The Briar-Kin are known for their vibrant dyes, their skills as rangers, and their fierce defense of the sunlit upper reaches from avian predators.

The Mist-Whiskers

The Mist-Whiskers dwell among the massive, labyrinthine roots that snake through the dark waters below. They are the navigators and scavengers of the Muridae, sailing driftwood skiffs through the eternal mist. Their culture is more mystical and insular than that of the Briar-Kin, focused on the ebb and flow of the tides and the secrets brought by the currents. They are expert shipwrights and scavengers, often recovering artifacts from shipwrecks that have drifted into the Boughs from the Boundary Ocean.

Traits & Culture

Despite their small stature, the Muridae are a brave and industrious people. They value community above all else, often living in extended family units called "Nests." Their technology is a blend of organic craftsmanship and ingenious scavenging—needle-rapiers forged from reclaimed steel, shell-bucklers, and spore-bombs are common tools of their trade. They are also deeply spiritual, primarily worshiping the The Great Owl, a stern but protective deity of the night and the hunt, and the Mist-Weaver, the spirit of the eternal fog that hides their home from the world.

In the broader world of Aethervale, Mousefolk are often underestimated, a mistake they frequently use to their advantage. Whether as nimble scouts for the Sub-Terran Accord or shrewd traders in the Drift Market, the Muridae have proven that in a world of giants and clockwork wonders, it is often the smallest who are the most indispensable.
