The Volcanic Geology Of The Lifeless Swells

The Volcanic Geology Of The Lifeless Swells

The Volcanic Geology of the Lifeless Swells

The Lifeless Swells (often referred to as the "Northern Wastes" by outsiders) is a region defined by extreme geothermal activity and environmental hostility. It is a land in a constant state of creation and destruction, fueled by the presence of the Ancient Red Dragon Ignis-Kaan.

The Obsidian Plains

The foundation of the Swells consists of vast, jagged plains of obsidian and basalt.

  • Hazards: The obsidian is "Razor-Sharp." Any traveler without thick-soled boots (or the natural hide of a Giant) will have their feet shredded within miles.
  • The Black Mirror: After a rare "Ash-Rain," the plains reflect the blood-red sky, creating a disorienting, mirror-like effect that the Ash-Walkers use to ambush intruders.

The Sulfuric Rivers

Instead of water, the primary liquid features of the Swells are rivers of molten sulfur and slow-moving basaltic lava.

  • The Blue-Burn: Molten sulfur burns with a spectral blue flame that is almost invisible in daylight but incredibly hot. It produces toxic fumes that can kill a human in minutes.
  • The Crystal-Bridges: Natural formations of heat-resistant quartz cross some of these rivers, serving as the only safe passage for the non-flying inhabitants.

The Peaks of Eternal Smoke

A range of towering stratovolcanoes that form the northern border of the territory.

  • Mount Ignis: The highest peak, believed to be the primary chimney for Ignis-Kaan's lair. It is always shrouded in a thick, "Living Smoke" that seems to move against the wind.
  • The Screaming Vents: High-altitude fissures that emit a high-pitched whistling sound when the internal pressure shifts. The Giantfolk use these sounds to predict eruptions.

Flora and Fauna: The Survivors

Very little grows in the Swells, but what does is highly adapted to the heat.

  • Cinder-Root: A parasitic plant that grows on the sides of active vents, drawing minerals directly from the volcanic gas. Its sap is used by Giantfolk Fire-Callers to enhance their magic.
  • Basalt-Crabs: Massive, armored crustaceans that live in the sulfuric pools. Their shells are as hard as iron and are often harvested by the Giantfolk for shield-bosses.
  • The Ash-Drake: Smaller cousins of the true dragons, these scavengers follow the Giantfolk armies, feeding on the remains of their victims.

The Environmental Poisoning

The air in the Swells is a "Slow Death." It is saturated with fine volcanic glass and toxic gases.

  • The Great Sickness: Outsiders who stay in the Swells for more than a few days develop a "Lungs of Glass"—a condition where the glass particles shred the internal tissues.
  • The Giants' Adaptation: The Giantfolk have evolved a secondary, leathery lung-lining and a unique blood chemistry that allows them to process the toxins, a trait they believe was gifted to them by Ignis-Kaan.
