The Emissary of Flame: The Parley of Smoke
Background & Objective
Pyraxos, a young red dragon claiming to be the "Voice of the Cinder King," has arrived at Throm-Ka’s Hold. He demands a "Blood-Tribute"—10,000 gold pieces in Aether-gems and the sacrifice of ten warriors to fuel the rebirth of the First Brood. Jarl Throm-Ka loathes the dragons but fears their power. The party arrives during the tense "Parley of Smoke" and must help the Jarl decide whether to pay the price, refuse the dragon, or find a third way.
Key NPCs & Motivations
- Pyraxos the Ember-Wing: An arrogant red dragon who views the giants as mere vassals. He carries the "Casket of Embers," a relic that connects him to the Cinder King’s power.
- Jarl Throm-Ka: The proud king of the Fire Giants. He wants to protect his clan but knows a direct fight with Pyraxos could bring the wrath of the Cinder King upon his Hold.
The Setting: Throm-Ka’s Hold
- The Gatehouse Courtyard: A massive arena where the snow has evaporated into a thick, sulfurous mist. Pyraxos perches atop the main gate, breathing smoke.
- The Hall of Ash: The Jarl’s throne room, where his warriors are split between those who want to fight and those who want to worship the dragon.
- The Volcanic Veins: A network of tunnels beneath the Hold where the clan’s Aether-gems are stored, now dangerously close to the dragon’s heat.
Encounters & Branching Paths
- The Parley of Smoke (Social/Intimidation): Acting as mediators between the Jarl and the Dragon. The party must navigate Pyraxos’s arrogance and Throm-Ka’s pride to avoid immediate bloodshed.
- The Casket Heist (Stealth): Throm-Ka secretly asks the party to steal the "Casket of Embers" while the giants distract Pyraxos. Without it, the dragon is significantly weakened.
- The Fanatic Subversion (Social/Combat): Dealing with Shaman Vor’gath and his followers, who are trying to sabotage the Jarl’s defenses to ensure the sacrifice happens.
- The Dragon-Slayer’s Gambit (Combat): A climactic battle against Pyraxos in the courtyard. The party must use the Hold’s heavy ballistae and the sulfurous mist to their advantage.
Narrative Outcomes & Loot
- Success: Pyraxos is defeated or driven off. The giants remain free, and the party is granted the "Jarl’s Signet." However, the Cinder King is now aware of their defiance.
- Failure: The tribute is paid. The Hold is weakened, and Pyraxos uses the warriors to fuel a new army of Cinder-Spawn in the Northern Peaks.
- Loot: The Casket of Embers (allows the user to control minor elementals), Jarl’s Signet Ring, and a cache of Aether-Gems.
