The Lifeless Swells

The Lifeless Swells
The Lifeless Swells is a desolate and gravitationally-unstable region located in the far North-East, serving as the ancestral, albeit brutal, home of the Giantfolk tribes. The area is a nightmare of volcanic activity and Aetheric backwash, characterized by vast fields of jagged obsidian and "floating mountains" that drift slowly through a soot-choked sky. The ground here is rarely still, plagued by constant tectonic shifts and localized mana-storms that can incinerate a traveler in seconds. It earned its name during the Dawning Age, as almost no traditional flora or fauna can survive the intense heat and the erratic, high-pressure atmosphere.
Despite its lethality, the Giantfolk have thrived in the Swells for centuries. They live in massive fortresses carved directly into the sides of active volcanoes, utilizing the geothermal heat to forge their primitive but devastatingly effective weaponry. The Swells are also home to the "Cinder-Hives," clusters of magma-infused insects that the giants use as both a food source and a component in their elemental rituals. The region is culturally centered around the "Throne of Embers," a massive obsidian platform where the various Jarls meet to settle disputes through ritualistic combat. It is from this throne that Jarl Throm-Ka currently rules, his power bolstered by the fiery omens whispered to him by the ancient red dragon, Ignis-Kaan.
The Lifeless Swells became a focal point of global history in 420 AW, when an unprecedented spike in volcanic activity—later revealed to be orchestrated by Ignis-Kaan—drove the Giantfolk tribes south in a desperate and violent migration. This "Giantfolk Incursion" forced the first-ever alliance between Kigum and Steamfort. While the incursion was eventually repelled, the Swells remain a constant source of anxiety for the southern nations. Recent reports from long-range scouts suggest that the volcanic activity in the region is increasing once again, and that the Giantfolk are consolidating their power, seemingly preparing for a second, even more devastating campaign to claim the "softer lands" of the south.
