Elemental Pyromancy And Runic Magic

Elemental Pyromancy and Runic Magic

The magic of the Lifeless Swells is not the refined, academic wizardry of Kigum. It is a raw, violent channeling of the earth's internal heat, amplified by the draconic presence of Ignis-Kaan. The Giantfolk view magic as a tool to be forged, much like a blade.

The Breath of the Dragon (Pyromancy)

The most common form of magic among the tribes is "Dragon-Breathing." This is not literal fire-breathing, but the ability to inhale the heat of an external source (a torch, a lava flow, or a burning foe) and exhale it as a focused blast of kinetic heat.

  • Technique: A "Fire-Caller" (the Giantfolk equivalent of a mage) uses their own body as a bellows. The more heat they absorb, the more their skin glows.
  • Risk: "Over-stoking" can lead to internal combustion. Many Fire-Callers are covered in scars from where their own magic began to melt their flesh.

Runic Branding (The Art of the Forge-Warden)

The Giantfolk "write" their spells using massive iron brands. These runes are carved into stone, iron, and the skin of the giants themselves.

  • The Ignis Rune: The most powerful and dangerous rune. It draws directly from the residual heat of the dragon's lair. It is used to power the massive engines of their longships and to enchant their siege weaponry.
  • The Obsidian Rune: A defensive rune. When struck, the object (or person) branded with this rune hardens instantly into volcanic glass, absorbing the impact before shattering and reforming.
  • The Smoke Rune: Used by the Ash-Walkers to create localized fog banks. It allows a giant to move with unnatural silence.

The Magma-Casting

In the most desperate battles, the Fire-Callers perform "Magma-Casting." They work in circles of three or more, chanting in a deep, resonant tone that mimics the vibration of the earth.

  • Effect: They can cause the ground to liquefy beneath their enemies or summon "Magma-Golems"—crude, towering constructs of molten rock that last only as long as the casters maintain their focus.
  • Cost: This magic often drains the life-force of the casters, leaving them as hollowed-out "Ash-Husks" if the spell is held too long.

Artifacts of the First Brood

The Giantfolk believe that some of their weapons are artifacts from the "First Brood"—the original giants who served the dragons at the dawn of time.

  • The Sunder-Hammer: A weapon said to be forged from a tooth of Ignis-Kaan. It can create localized earthquakes with a single strike.
  • The Cinder-Cape: A garment made of woven obsidian threads that allows the wearer to walk through dragon-fire unharmed.

Interaction with Aether

The Giantfolk despise "Clean Aether" (the blue-tinted magic of Kigum). They believe it is a "cold lie" that denies the true nature of power. When Giantfolk magic encounters Aether-based technology, the result is often an "Ember-Burst"—a violent, unpredictable explosion of steam and shrapnel as the two opposing energies reject one another.
