Traditions Of The Iron Blood

Traditions of the Iron Blood
The culture of the Giantfolk in the Lifeless Swells is defined by a singular philosophy: Strength is tempered in fire, and loyalty is sealed in blood. Since the awakening of Ignis-Kaan, these traditions have evolved from harsh survivalist customs into a fanatical cult of draconic power.
The Rite of the Scorched Heart
Every Giant reaching the age of maturity must undergo the Rite of the Scorched Heart. The youth is led to the base of the "Smoking Pillar" and forced to inhale the concentrated fumes of a volcanic vent while reciting the lineage of Throm-Ka.
- The Outcome: Those who survive are believed to have "burned away their weakness." Their lungs become resistant to the toxic atmosphere of the Swells, and they are granted the right to carry a weapon.
- The Mark: A successful rite leaves the Giant with a raspy, metallic voice, a sign of their "Scorched" status.
The Trial of the Longship
Before any raid, the warriors participate in the Trial of the Longship. They must row a lead-weighted training vessel against the boiling currents of the "Magma-Reach" (a river of slow-moving lava).
- Purpose: This builds the immense upper-body strength required to row the massive iron-clad longships through the heavy northern seas.
- Consequence: Failure to keep pace results in being cast overboard. It is said that the "Lava-Treaders" (those who survive being cast in) are the only ones truly fit to lead a boarding party.
Blood-Bonding with the Dragon
While Ignis-Kaan remains largely unseen, his influence is felt through the tradition of Blood-Bonding. Warriors who distinguish themselves in battle are permitted to bathe their weapons in a pool of "Dragon-Bleed"—volcanic glass infused with the dragon's residual magic.
- The Effect: This bonds the weapon to the warrior's soul. If the weapon breaks, the warrior is expected to fall on the shards, as their soul is considered shattered.
The Law of the Jarl (The Iron Code)
Jarl Throm-Ka's word is the only law. However, his rule is supported by the "Iron Code," a set of three absolute dictates:
- Silence in the Presence of the Flame: No Giant may speak while a volcanic vent is erupting, as it is considered the voice of Ignis-Kaan.
- The Tithe of Steel: Every kill made by a warrior must be marked by a notch in their armor. Once the armor is full, it is melted down and forged into a new weapon for the Jarl's armory.
- No Step Backward: To retreat without an order from a Thane or the Jarl is a capital offense. The coward is not executed by blade, but by "The Slow Cooling"—being left in the freezing northern wastes without a fire until they turn to stone.
Funerary Rites: Returning to the Core
The Giantfolk do not bury their dead. They believe that their bodies are merely shells for the elemental fire within. When a warrior falls, they are carried to the nearest active crater and cast in. Their "Smoke-Spirit" is believed to join the great cloud that shrouds the Swells, forever watching over their kin.
