Tribes Of The Swells

Tribes of the Swells
The Giantfolk of the Lifeless Swells are not a monolithic entity, but a collection of disparate tribes unified under the iron fist of Jarl Throm-Ka. Each tribe brings a unique specialty to the war-effort, shaped by the specific volcanic sub-region they inhabit.
The Ash-Walkers (Cinder Giants)
The Ash-Walkers are the most numerous of the tribes. They dwell in the low-lying plains where the volcanic ash falls like snow.
- Specialty: Scouting and Skirmishing.
- Appearance: Their skin is a mottled grey, indistinguishable from the ash they hide in. They are leaner than other giants, built for endurance across the shifting dunes of soot.
- Role: They serve as the eyes and ears of Throm-Ka, utilizing "Ash-veils" (rudimentary smoke magic) to disappear in plain sight.
The Cinder-Skulls (Fire Giants)
Hailing from the rim of the Great Calderas, the Cinder-Skulls are the master smiths and heavy infantry of the Giantfolk.
- Specialty: Metallurgy and Siege Warfare.
- Appearance: Their skin is the color of cooling magma—deep black with glowing orange veins. They often graft iron plates directly onto their thick hides.
- Role: They forge the massive "Magma-Bolts" and iron-clad longships. In battle, they form the "Wall of Ember," a phalanx of shields that radiates intense heat.
The Sky-Ragers (Storm/Cloud Giant Outcasts)
A smaller, more elite group that lives on the highest, smoke-shrouded peaks. They have been twisted by the sulfuric fumes and the draconic aura of Ignis-Kaan.
- Specialty: Aerial Reconnaissance and Weather Manipulation.
- Appearance: Once pale-skinned, they now appear bruised and purple, with eyes that glow like lightning trapped in a jar.
- Role: They use their control over wind to clear paths through the toxic smoke for the army, or to summon "Soot-Storms" to blind their enemies.
The Iron-Bound (The Jarl's Guard)
The Iron-Bound are not a tribe by blood, but by oath. They are the strongest warriors taken from all other tribes and "re-born" in the fires of the Maw of Kaan.
- Specialty: Elite Shock Troops.
- Appearance: Their bodies are almost entirely covered in runic iron brands. They carry "Ignis-Blades"—massive swords tempered in the dragon's own breath.
- Role: They serve as Throm-Ka's personal enforcers and the vanguard of any major assault. To see an Iron-Bound is to know that the Jarl's eyes are upon you.
Tribal Hierarchy: The Rule of the Strong
While Throm-Ka is the absolute Jarl, each tribe is led by a Thane. A Thane maintains their position through "The Trial of the Smolder," a wrestling match held over a pit of active lava. To lose is to be consumed; to win is to lead for another season. Since the rise of Ignis-Kaan, these trials have become significantly more frequent and more lethal.
