Floating Fortresses Of The Broad Swells

Floating Fortresses Of The Broad Swells

Floating Fortresses of the Broad Swells

In the turbulent waters of the Broad Swells, permanent island settlements are rare due to shifting tectonic plates and localized mana-storms. To maintain a presence, mercenary companies and merchant guilds have constructed "Bastions"—massive, mobile floating fortresses.

The Bastion-Class Vessels

A Bastion is less a ship and more a floating city-state. They are built upon massive hulls of reinforced ironwood or steam-pressed steel, kept afloat by a combination of buoyancy tanks and Aether-buoyancy crystals.

Key Features:

  • The Keel-Anchors: Massive chains that can be lowered to latch onto the seabed, allowing the fortress to stay stationary even in the most violent storms.
  • Aether-Domes: High-end fortresses (like those used by Kigum) are encased in shimmering arcane domes that protect against both the elements and projectile fire.
  • Submersible Bays: The lower decks often feature moon pools, allowing smaller submersibles and marine cavalry to deploy undetected.

Notable Fortresses

1. Vane’s Vigil (The Crimson Company)

The headquarters of the Crimson Company. It is a grim, utilitarian structure of black iron and red banners. It is famous for its "Battery Row"—a line of heavy cannons that can devastate an entire fleet before they reach boarding range. It is said that Vane’s personal quarters are located in the highest spire, where he monitors the entire Swells via a massive brass orrery.

2. The Gilded Anvil (Steamfort/Salt Shields)

Originally a Steamfort mining platform, it was sold to the Salt Shields. It is a marvel of engineering, featuring a massive internal shipyard where repairs can be made in the middle of the ocean. It reeks of oil and coal smoke but is the sturdiest structure in the southern hemisphere.

3. The Drift-Market

A neutral "Floating City" composed of dozens of smaller ships lashed together around a central core. It is the primary trade hub for mercenaries, where contracts are signed, information is sold, and the "Blood-Coin" (the unofficial currency of the Swells) is minted.

Life on a Bastion

Life is harsh and disciplined. Space is at a premium, and everyone—from the cooks to the commanders—is expected to be a combatant if the fortress is boarded. Water is distilled from the sea using Aether-heaters, and food is largely limited to what can be fished or grown in hydroponic vats.

Tactical Significance

A Bastion serves as a "Force Multiplier." A company that controls a Bastion controls the surrounding shipping lanes. Taking one down requires a coordinated effort, often involving internal sabotage combined with a massive naval assault.
