Blood Coin

Blood-Coin
The Blood-Coin is the unofficial but universally accepted currency of the Broad Swells, used primarily by mercenary companies, independent traders, and the various factions of the Drift-Market. Unlike the standardized gold and silver minted by Kigum or the iron credits of Steamfort, the Blood-Coin has no intrinsic value in the major city-states. It is a crude, heavy coin forged from "Sunder-Iron"—a cold-iron alloy that is naturally resistant to Aetheric manipulation. Each coin is stamped with the "Swell-Sigil," a stylized representation of a crashing wave and a crossed sword, and is traditionally blackened with a specialized volcanic ash to prevent rust.
The value of the Blood-Coin is derived entirely from the services it can purchase within the lawless waters. It is the only currency accepted for signing mercenary contracts with major bands like the Crimson Company or the Salt Shields, and it is the primary medium of exchange in the Drift-Market for "sensitive" goods like stolen Aether-crystals or information on Kigum naval patrols. The name "Blood-Coin" reflects its origin; early versions were often literal payment for the recovery of bodies or the execution of high-value bounties. Today, the currency is "minted" exclusively on the neutral platform of the Drift-Market, with the exchange rate managed by a council of the most powerful mercenary leaders and information brokers.
Possessing Blood-Coins within the borders of Kigum or Steamfort is often considered a criminal offense, as it is seen as proof of involvement in illegal mercenary activities. However, for those who live and die in the Swells, the Blood-Coin is the only true measure of wealth and power. It is said that a sufficient amount of Blood-Coin can buy anything in the lawless sea, from a custom-built floating fortress to the assassination of a high-ranking noble. The coins are often carried in specialized, lead-lined pouches to prevent them from interfering with a ship's magical navigation systems, a testament to the potent anti-magic properties of the Sunder-Iron from which they are forged.
