First Mate Barnaby

Barnaby is the loyal and physically imposing first mate of the Sea-Whiskers, serving under Captain Squeak. A stout and scarred Mist-Whisker with a missing eye and a deep, gravelly voice, Barnaby is the muscle of the ship's crew. He is responsible for the ship's maintenance, the management of the deckhands, and the defense of the vessel against sea-monsters.

Barnaby is a mouse of action. He has little interest in Squeak's complex navigational theories or the scholarly pursuits of Elder Thorne. His world is one of ropes, pulleys, and the weight of a boat-hook in his paws. He is a master of close-quarters combat on the cramped decks of driftwood skiffs and has saved Squeak's life more times than either of them care to count.

Despite his intimidating appearance, Barnaby is known for his soft spot for young Muridae orphans in Drift-Haven, often bringing them rare treats or toys scavenged from shipwrecks.

Secret Motivation: Barnaby is secretly a former member of the Salt Shields, a militia from the Broad Swells. He fled the mainland after his village was destroyed by the Abyssal Fleet and is terrified that the Fleet will eventually find the Boughs.

Adventure Hook: Barnaby has found a piece of a map that shows the location of an "Abyssal Beacon" hidden within the mangrove roots. He believes the beacon is a homing device for the Abyssal Fleet and needs the party's help to destroy it before it can be activated.
