The Drift Market

The Drift-Market

The Drift-Market is the largest and most famous neutral "Floating City" in the Broad Swells, serving as the primary hub for trade, diplomacy, and information exchange among the world's various mercenary bands, independent merchant guilds, and outcasts. Unlike the fortified Bastions of the Crimson Company or the Salt Shields, the Drift-Market is not a singular vessel, but a massive, shifting jigsaw puzzle of hundreds of smaller ships, barges, and platforms lashed together around a central core. This core, a massive, ancient platform of unknown origin, provides the stable foundation upon which the market's ever-changing "streets" and "districts" are built.

The economy of the Drift-Market is driven by the "Blood-Coin," the unofficial currency of the Broad Swells, though barter and trade in Aetheric information are equally common. Every conceivable good and service can be found within the market's chaotic alleys: from high-end Steamfort mechanical parts and refined Kigum Aether-crystals to rare monstrous components and forbidden magical scrolls. The "Central Plaza" is home to the "Contractors' Guild," where mercenaries sign their lucrative agreements, and the "Whisper-Walk," a district dedicated to information brokers and spies. Despite the lawlessness of the surrounding ocean, the Drift-Market maintains a strict, albeit brutal, neutrality, enforced by a joint security force known as "The Peace-Keepers," who are funded by a mandatory tax on every transaction.

Life in the Drift-Market is a constant struggle for space and survival. The "city" is never the same from one day to the next, as ships constantly arrive and depart, causing the entire structure to groan and shift. Water is distilled from the sea using common Aether-stills, and food is largely comprised of "Swell-Fish" and hydroponic moss. Despite the harsh conditions, the market is a vibrant melting pot of cultures, where humans, dwarves, elves, and even the occasional Warforged interact with a degree of freedom unseen in the major city-states. It is the only place in Aethervale where a high-ranking Kigum noble might share a drink with a disgraced Steamfort engineer, both seeking the same piece of forbidden lore or a way to escape their past.
