Drift-Haven

Drift-Haven
Overview & Aesthetic
Drift-Haven is the primary cultural and economic center of the Mist-Whiskers, located at the dark, misty root-level of The Shrouded Boughs. It is a sprawling, floating settlement constructed entirely from the scavenged hulls of shipwrecks that have drifted into the Boughs over centuries. The shantytown is lashed together with massive kelp-ropes and tethered to the colossal mangrove roots.
The aesthetic of Drift-Haven is one of survivalist ingenuity: barnacle-crusted oak, rusted iron fittings, and salt-stained sails are used to build multi-level dwellings that bob gently with the tides. The air is eternally damp and smells of salt and old wood.
History & Lore
The first ships to form Drift-Haven were merchant vessels from the Argentari Empire that were lost in a magical storm nearly three hundred years ago. The Mist-Whiskers found the wrecks and realized that the sturdy hulls offered better protection from the Boundary Ocean's currents than their traditional reed-huts. Over time, more wrecks—pirate galleons, elven skiffs, and even a dwarven submersible—were added to the mass, creating a floating labyrinth of history.
Points of Interest
- The Captain’s Hull: A massive, partially submerged galleon that serves as the town's meeting hall and the residence of the elder sailors.
- The Barnacle Market: A series of interconnected decks where scavengers trade shipwreck artifacts, dried fish, and rare kelp for Briar-Kin dyes and acorn-flour.
- The Dry-Dock Roots: A sheltered area within the mangrove roots where Mist-Whisker shipwrights build and repair their specialized driftwood skiffs.
- The Lighthouse of Mists: A tall, precarious tower built from a ship’s mast, topped with a large, glowing aether-lantern that helps sailors find their way back through the fog.
Local Factions & NPCs
- The Mist-Weaver Coven: Maintain a presence in Drift-Haven, ensuring that the floating city remains hidden within the magical fog.
- Captain Squeak: The most renowned navigator in Drift-Haven, who knows the secret paths through the root-maze better than anyone.
- Scavenger Grix: A wiry and eccentric Mist-Whisker who specializes in finding valuable "surface-world" technology in the deep-water wrecks.
- The Drift-Watch: A volunteer force of sailors who protect the haven from predatory sea-creatures and the occasional group of desperate pirates.
Environmental Hazards / Mechanics
- The Deep Fog: Vision in Drift-Haven is limited to 30 feet. Ranged attacks beyond this range are made with disadvantage.
- Shifting Platforms: During high tide or storms, the decks of Drift-Haven can become unstable. Characters must make a DC 11 Acrobatics check when taking a Dash action to avoid falling prone.
- Submerged Hazards: The waters beneath the haven are filled with jagged shipwreck debris and aggressive sea-life (like Mist-Turtles or Root-Crabs).
