Toxic Sludge Cleanup

Toxic Sludge Cleanup
Location: Lifeless Swells (The Boundary Ocean) Level Range: 3-5
Background & Objective
The harbor of Lifeless Swells, once a bustling hub for the Steam Wrights Consortium, is drowning in a neon-blue nightmare. While initial reports blamed a leaked container of industrial alchemical waste, the truth is far more ancient and subterranean. A deep-sea vent has fractured, and the Omnisporangium—the world’s sentient fungal nervous system—is purging Blue Bile into the local aquifer.
This caustic, bioluminescent effluent is the byproduct of the Mycelium breaking down raw magic. As the bile floods the harbor, it is transmuting local flora and fauna into aggressive, crystalline horrors. The party must dive into the pressure-crushed sea caves beneath the coast to sever the Mycelium’s excretion ducts and seal the geothermal rupture before the rising toxicity dissolves the very foundations of the town.
Key NPC: Harbor-Warden Hiss
A weathered veteran of the Steam Wrights with copper-plated prosthetic fingers and a wheezing cough.
"The sea used to give us fish; now it just gives us a bill for new boots and a funeral. That blue rot isn't just waste—it's the world trying to spit us out."
Ideals & Flaws
- Ideal: Industrious. "Progress is the only thing keeping us from sliding back into the mud."
- Flaw: Cynical. Hiss believes the town is already lost and is secretly pocketing "cleanup funds" to buy a ticket to the floating gardens of Kigum.
Rumors & Whispers
- True: The "sludge" is actually a coolant secreted by a massive, continent-spanning organism that lives miles beneath the seafloor.
- False: The Steam Wrights Consortium intentionally dumped the waste to mutate the local crabs into "living armored tanks" for the military.
Sight, Sound, and Smell
- The water is a thick, churning cerulean, glowing with a sickly bioluminescence that casts long, flickering shadows against the copper-clad piers. The rhythmic, metallic hiss of steam-pumps struggling to clear the drains competes with the low, guttural gurgle of gas escaping the depths. The air carries a sharp, eye-watering sting of ozone mixed with the cloying, sweet scent of overripe mushrooms.
The Gimmick: Blue Bile Fog
The interaction between the hot geothermal vents and the Blue Bile has created a localized Acidic Fog.
- Corrosive Atmosphere: Creatures starting their turn in the water take 1d4 acid damage.
- Mycelial Murk: Vision is heavily obscured beyond 10 feet. Any creature attempting to use magical sight (like Detect Magic) is blinded for 1 round as the raw Aetheric waste overloads their senses.
Markings & Codes
Scratched into the rusted copper plating of the lower docks is a series of interconnected diamonds and wavy lines—the hobo signs of the Sub-Terran Accord.
- The Marking: A diamond with a vertical line through it, topped by three dots.
- Translation: "The Great Lung breathes here; the air is poison, but the crystals are pure."
Tactical Combat & Challenges
- Bile-Mutated Crabs: These giant crustaceans have consumed enough Aetheric waste to grow shells of hardened, reflective crystal.
- The Excretion Duct: The "leak" is a pulsating, organic valve of fungal tissue. To seal it, players must use a combination of physical force and magical suppression (Arcana checks) to "cauterize" the Mycelial thread.
- Pneumatic Hazards: Broken steam pipes from the harbor’s infrastructure may burst during combat, forcing Dexterity saving throws to avoid being knocked into the acidic water.
Monster: Bile-Mutated Crab
Ecology: Once standard harbor scavengers, these crabs have entered a symbiotic relationship with the Blue Bile. They filter the toxic sludge through their gills, storing the raw magical energy in their shells. Tactics: They use their Reflective Carapace to redirect spell attacks. In combat, they attempt to grapple foes and drag them into the deepest pools of Blue Bile, waiting for the acidity to soften the "prey" inside its armor.
Narrative Outcomes & Loot
If the party seals the vent, the bioluminescent glow fades, and the "Toxic Sludge" begins to neutralize. The Steam Wrights Consortium will grant the party Significant Political Favor, allowing them access to restricted Aether-powered transport. If they fail, the Lifeless Swells must be evacuated as the foundations of the harbor dissolve into the bay.
Item: Aether-Glass Respirator
Wondrous Item, Rare (Requires Attunement) Lore & Origin: Forged by the Aether-Weaver goblins and salvaged from a deep-sea wreck, this brass-and-glass mask was designed to filter the "sighs" of the Omnisporangium. Mechanics: While wearing this mask, you are immune to the effects of Acidic Fog and the Sighing Sickness. Additionally, you can breathe underwater for up to 1 hour per day, provided the water is infused with Blue Bile or Aetheric energy.
