The Mana-Well Corrupted

The Mana-Well Corrupted
Location: The Mana Wastes, Aethervale
Level Range: 4–6
Background & Objective
A local settlement’s only clean mana-well has curdled into a sickly, translucent purple hue. Once a vibrant font of shimmering arcane energy used to power both local crops and the copper-bound steam engines of the region, the well has now become a source of necrotic blight. The waters have grown caustic, manifesting swarms of "Mana-Leeches" that feed upon any magic brought near the surface.
This corruption is not a natural decay but a direct result of a jagged fragment of Dead Aether—a necrotic anchor lodged deep within the well’s crystalline throat. This fragment acts as a parasitic drain, weakening the planetary wards. In response, the Omnisporangium, the world’s subterranean fungal nervous system, has deployed an aggressive immune response. Luminescent blue mycelium has begun to choke the cavern walls, secreting volatile Blue Bile to dissolve the necrotic anchor. The party must descend into the well, navigate the conflict between the arcane rot and the fungal blight, and extract the Dead Aether before the well—and the settlement—implodes.
Sight, Sound, and Smell
The air is heavy with the rhythmic hiss of failing pneumatic pumps and the acrid, ozone-sharp scent of curdled magic. Beneath the copper walkways, the water glows with a bruised purple light, casting dancing shadows against walls covered in pulsing, bioluminescent blue fungi. The only sound is the wet, squelching heartbeat of the Mycelium competing with the high-pitched whine of the Mana-Leeches.
Key NPCs
Venda 'Sporelung'
A mutated, deep-delving merchant who breathes Blue Bile through a customized copper respirator. She views the Mana-Well not as a tragedy, but as a harvest opportunity.
"The earth is just coughing, dearies. I’ve got the lozenges, provided you’ve got the Aether-dust to pay for ‘em."
- Ideals: Survival. The world is changing; you either adapt to the spores or you become fertilizer.
- Flaws: Greed. She will withhold vital information about Blue Bile toxicity if she thinks she can sell the antidote for double later.
Grand Shaman Glokk
A prophet of the Aether-Weaver Goblins with a jagged Aether crystal embedded in his skull. He speaks in a discordant "we" that reflects his connection to the Omnisporangium.
"The Great Root weeps purple tears. We must cut the shadow-stone away so the Blue Blood can flow clear again."
- Ideals: Harmony. All life must serve the equilibrium of the Omnisporangium.
- Flaws: Cryptic. His visions are so vast that he often forgets that mortals cannot see the world-tree's veins.
Rumors & Whispers
- True: The "Dead Aether" at the bottom of the well was placed there by agents of the Obsidian Scale to test how the Mycelium responds to necrotic "interference."
- False: The purple color is actually a rare form of liquid amethyst that can grant immortality if drank during a lunar eclipse. (In reality, drinking it causes immediate internal crystallization and death).
The Gimmick: Energy Drain & Aether Instability
The presence of the Dead Aether anchor creates a "Void Pressure" within the well.
- Mana-Leeches: These creatures target creatures with spell slots or Ki points. On a successful hit, the target must succeed on a DC 13 Wisdom saving throw or lose their lowest-level spell slot or 1 Ki point.
- Blink Effects: The volatile interaction between the Blue Bile and the corrupted water causes reality to flicker. At the start of each round, a random player must succeed on a DC 12 Charisma saving throw or be affected by the Blink spell until the start of their next turn.
- Blue Bile Hazards: Stepping in the glowing blue fungal pools forces a DC 14 Constitution saving throw. On a failure, the creature’s skin begins to harden into fungal plates, granting a +1 to AC but reducing movement speed by 10 feet for 1 hour.
Markings & Codes
Scratched into the copper pipes near the well's entrance is a series of three jagged lines crossed by a fungal bloom.
- Translation: "The Earth's Blood is Poison here; wait for the Blue Breath to pass." (A warning from the Sub-Terran Accord about the caustic nature of the corrupted mana).
Tactical Combat & Challenges
The Bile-Choked Elemental (Final Boss)
At the heart of the well, a Water Elemental has been consumed by both the necrotic rot and the Mycelium’s counter-measures. It is a mass of swirling purple sludge and glowing blue fungal spores.
Tactics
The Elemental uses its Whelming ability to pull players into its caustic form, dealing both necrotic and acid damage. It prioritizes spellcasters to fuel its "Arcane Regurgitation" reaction—whenever a spell is cast within 30 feet, the Elemental can use its reaction to absorb the energy and heal 2d8 hit points. It will use the environment to knock players into the Blue Bile pools, hoping to petrify them with fungal growth.
Ecology
This creature is a "Mycelial Proxy," a temporary immune cell created by the Omnisporangium. It is not inherently evil, but its programmed directive to "destroy all foreign agents" in the well makes it hostile to the party. Once the Dead Aether anchor is removed, the Elemental loses its cohesion and dissolves into harmless mineral water.
Lore & Origin
The Mana-Well of the Wastes was originally a primary node in the Deep-Strands, the indestructible Aether-glass tunnels maintained by the Sub-Terran Accord. Centuries ago, it served as a cooling vent for the planet's internal heat. As surface civilizations industrialized, they tapped into the well, unknowingly siphoning the world's "nervous system." The current corruption is a "Sighing Sickness" localized to the well—a sign that the Obsidian Scale has successfully pierced the planetary wards nearby. The Mycelium’s presence here is a form of "Cosmic Surgery," an attempt by the CR 30 fungal god to seal the wound before the World-Fire can begin.
Narrative Outcomes & Loot
Success ensures the settlement’s survival and halts the spread of the purple rot into the local leylines.
- Political Favor: The Sub-Terran Accord recognizes the party as "Auxiliary Antibodies," granting them safe passage through the Northern Continent’s Deep-Strand tunnels.
- Thematic Loot: The Aether-Resonator. A brass-and-glass compass that points toward the nearest concentration of Pure Aether. It can be used once per day to cast Identify, but doing so causes the user's hair to glow blue for 1d4 hours.
- Fragment of the Anchor: If the party keeps a shard of the Dead Aether, they may find themselves hunted by both the Vulture Syndicate and the Echoes of Ruin.
