The Resin-Tuning Process

The Resin-Tuning Process

The Resin-Tuning Process

Resin-Tuning is a specialized form of aetheric engineering practiced by the wrights of The Crown City of Ardor. It is the primary method used to create the Mousefolk's high-strength equipment, from their Needle-Rapiers to the frameworks of their Leaf-Kites. The process involves the use of concentrated aether-sap to permanently alter the physical and magical properties of common materials.

The Theory of Resonance

The fundamental principle behind Resin-Tuning is that everything in The Shrouded Boughs—the wood, the stone, and even the creatures—possesses a specific "Aetheric Frequency." By applying sap and then using an Aether-Tuning Fork to find the object's resonant frequency, a wright can "lock" the material into a state of higher efficiency and durability.

The Tuning Steps

  1. Preparation: The object is thoroughly cleaned and then coated in a thin layer of unrefined aether-sap.
  2. Frequency Finding: The wright strikes an aether-tuning fork and moves it along the object. They listen for the "Sweet Spot"—the point where the fork's vibrations cause the sap to glow with a steady, golden light.
  3. The Set: Once the frequency is found, the wright applies a small amount of "Hardening-Primer." This causes the sap to crystallize almost instantly, bonding with the object’s internal structure and permanently "tuning" its resonance.

The Results of Tuning

A "Tuned" object is significantly superior to its un-tuned counterpart:

  • Physical Strength: Tuned wood can be as hard as iron, while tuned metal is lighter and more flexible.
  • Magical Conductance: Tuned objects are much better at channeling aetheric energy, making them ideal for use as magical focuses or power-conduits.
  • Resistance to Decay: The tuned resin creates a permanent seal that protects the object from the forest’s high humidity and the corrosive effects of salt-spray.

Master Wrights

Only the most experienced craftsmen, like Master Wright Lira, have the patience and sensory acuity to perform Resin-Tuning. It is an art that requires both mechanical knowledge and a deep, intuitive connection to the forest’s magical rhythms. The workshops in Ardor are often filled with the constant, high-pitched hum of tuning forks as the city’s wrights work to equip the Acorn Guard.
