Naval Tactics

Naval Tactics of the Pirate Lords
The Pirates of Crystal Cove do not win through superior numbers or heavier armor; they win through deception, environmental mastery, and the surgical application of aether-tech.
General Philosophy: "The Strike and Fade"
Pirate captains are taught never to engage in a fair fight. If they are seen, they have already lost half the battle. They utilize the natural geography of the Crystal Archipelago—its jagged reefs, shifting mists, and aether-currents—to their advantage.
Tactics against Kigum Galleons
Kigum ships are slow, heavily armored, and rely on traditional broadside volleys.
- The Reef-Lure: Pirates will use small, shallow-draft skiffs to lure Kigum galleons into "The Teeth"—areas where submerged crystal reefs will tear the hull of a deep-draft ship.
- Mast-Sniping: Using aether-longbows and wind-lances, pirates prioritize destroying the rigging and masts of Kigum ships, leaving them "dead in the water" and ripe for boarding.
- Boarding from Below: Utilizing specialized diving gear powered by small aether-tanks, pirate boarding parties often swim beneath the Kigum hull and climb up the far side, catching the marines by surprise.
Tactics against Steamfort Ironclads
Steamfort ships are faster than Kigum's and heavily armed with steam-cannons, but they are vulnerable to aetheric interference.
- Aether-Damping: Lady Elara's flotilla uses "Damping Fields" to disrupt the steam-pressure regulators on Steamfort engines, causing them to overheat or lose power at critical moments.
- The "Smoke-Screen" Maneuver: Pirates use specialized "Fog-Casters" to create localized banks of thick, reflective mist. Steamfort's advanced targeting systems rely on clear lines of sight, which the mist effectively nullifies.
- The Grapple-Pull: Multiple pirate brigs will fire heavy harpoons into a single Ironclad, using their combined speed (often boosted by aether-overdrive) to pull the Ironclad off course or into an obstacle.
The "Maelstrom" Formation
When the Council of Five gathers for a full-scale battle, they employ the Maelstrom. The fleet circles the enemy in a high-speed spiral, constantly shifting positions. This makes it impossible for enemy gunners to track a single target, while the pirates can deliver continuous, rotating fire from every angle.
Use of the "Crystal Mist"
The Archipelago is frequently shrouded in a mist that refracts light in strange ways. Pirate navigators, trained in "Mist-Reading," can navigate these waters with perfect clarity, while outsiders often find themselves sailing in circles or hallucinating phantom ships.
