The Necropolis of Oros

The Necropolis of Oros

The Necropolis of Oros

History

Deep within the treacherous expanse of the Mana Wastes lies Oros, an ancient city that predates the Arcane Ascendancy by thousands of years. It was built by a civilization that worshipped death not as an end, but as an eternal, perfect state of being. Carved entirely from sheer, seamless black obsidian, the city was buried during a catastrophic magical upheaval. Now, it has been unearthed and claimed by Kel'Thuz, who uses its geometrically perfect architecture as an amplifier for his psychic resurrection ritual.

Key Features

  • The Obsidian Architecture: The city is a masterpiece of dark geometry. The buildings have no windows, and the streets are laid out in an intricate, maddening mandala. The obsidian walls reflect no light, absorbing torchlight and magical illumination, making it incredibly difficult to navigate.
  • The River of Souls: A sluggish, glowing pale-blue river of concentrated necrotic energy flows through the center of the Necropolis. This is the raw soul-stuff harvested from the Walkers in Kigum, being funneled directly into the central ziggurat.
  • The Ziggurat of the Whisper: The massive, stepped pyramid at the heart of the city. This is the seat of Kel'Thuz's power, where the final stage of his physical manifestation is taking place.

Hazards

  • Necrotic Saturation: The ambient energy in Oros is anathema to the living. Healing magic is only half as effective, and taking a short or long rest in the city requires a Constitution save to avoid waking up with a level of exhaustion.
  • The Labyrinth of Mirrors: The inner sanctum of the Ziggurat is designed to break the mind. The obsidian walls act as perfect mirrors, but they reflect the viewer's darkest fears and failures, requiring constant Wisdom saves to avoid attacking illusions or suffering psychic damage.
  • Undead Legions: Oros is guarded by elite, ancient undead—Death Knights, Bone Nagas, and the massive Whisper Hulks created by the Flesh-Stitcher.

Local Factions

  • The Inner Circle of the Obsidian Scale: Only the most devoted and powerful cultists, including High Priestess Vael, are permitted in Oros. They are zealots who will fight to the last breath to protect the ritual.
  • The Echoes of the Past: Occasionally, the spirits of the city's original, ancient inhabitants manifest. They are neutral, bound by ancient laws of hospitality, and might offer cryptic guidance or safe resting places if approached with the proper respect for the dead.
