Arcane Ascendancy

The Arcane Ascendancy was a radical and expansionist magi-ocracy that rose to power during the Arcanum Wars (210-225 AW). Composed of a coalition of rogue mages who believed that those with the gift of magic were inherently superior to the "mundane" races, the Ascendancy sought to unify the world under a singular, magical dictatorship. They rejected the stabilizing influence of the Aetheric Accord and the burgeoning industrialization of the North, viewing magic not as a resource to be protected, but as a divine right to be exercised. At its height, the Ascendancy controlled several major cities in the central continent and launched a devastating campaign to conquer the Eastern Continent.

The Ascendancy's military was a terrifying display of unchecked arcane power. They utilized "Mana-Forged" thralls—corpses or prisoners infused with raw, unstable Aether to serve as tireless, exploding shock troops. Their leadership, a council of thirteen Archmagi known as the "Elders of the Void," spent much of their resources researching world-breaking spells, including early attempts to harness the negative energy of the Mana Wastes. Their goal was to replace the world's natural Aether Currents with a "Synthetic Ley-Line" that they alone could control, effectively turning the entire planet into a magical battery to fuel their immortality.

The Ascendancy was eventually broken by the combined efforts of the Crimson Company and several local militias during the War of Sunder. Their downfall was accelerated by their own arrogance; they consistently underestimated the tactical genius of Commander Vane and the devastating effectiveness of early black-powder weapons. The final siege of their capital resulted in a massive magical implosion that left the city a permanent, gravitationally-unstable ruin. While the Ascendancy was eradicated, their forbidden research continues to plague Aethervale, often appearing in the hands of cults like the Void Gazers or desperate scholars seeking a shortcut to power. Many of the modern laws regarding Aether refinement were written specifically to prevent another organization like the Ascendancy from ever rising again.
