High Priestess Vael

High Priestess Vael
Appearance
Vael is a striking figure, formerly a noble of the Arcane Ascendancy, who now masks her identity with a featureless veil of black silk that shimmers with dark, iridescent runes. She wears flowing robes of midnight blue and silver, tailored perfectly to her tall, commanding frame. Her hands are adorned with obsidian rings, and her skin has taken on a pale, almost translucent quality from her exposure to necrotic energies. When she speaks, her voice is musical and perfectly modulated, belying the fanaticism beneath.
Personality
Cold, calculating, and utterly devoted to her cause. Vael does not see herself as evil; rather, she views undeath as the ultimate cure for the chaotic, painful existence of mortality. She is condescendingly patient, often speaking to enemies as if they were unruly children who fail to grasp a greater truth. She abhors messiness and chaos, preferring intricate plans, enchantments, and political maneuvering over brute force.
Secret Motives
While outwardly she preaches the ascension of all mortals through the Whispering Sickness, Vael secretly fears death and the loss of her own identity. She believes that by serving Kel'Thuz faithfully, she will be granted a unique form of undeath—one that preserves her ego, beauty, and intellect entirely intact, unlike the mindless "Walkers" she creates. She is actively siphoning a small percentage of the souls meant for Kel'Thuz to secure her own phylactery.
Combat Tactics
- Enchantment and Illusion: Vael avoids direct physical confrontation. She begins combat by casting powerful illusion spells (like Mislead or Mirage Arcane) to disorient her foes and mask her true location.
- Mind Control: She uses spells like Dominate Person and Mass Suggestion to turn the party's strongest martial characters against the spellcasters.
- Necrotic Wards: She surrounds herself with layers of protective magic, including Armor of Agathys (necrotic damage version) and Globe of Invulnerability.
- Escape Plan: If her hit points drop below half, she will not hesitate to use Word of Recall to retreat to a heavily fortified safehouse, leaving mind-controlled minions or summoned undead to cover her escape.
