The Doomed Expedition: Necropolis of Oros
Background & Objective
A wealthy patron from Kigum has funded a massive expedition to the Necropolis of Oros, a vertical ruin in the heart of the Mana Wastes. Their goal: recover a sentient "Null-Sphere Fragment" believed to be a shard of the original device that shattered the world. The party is hired as "Specialist Escorts" for the Oros Vanguard, a team of forty researchers who have a habit of not coming back.
Key NPCs & Motivations
- Professor Pendergast: The head researcher. He is obsessed with the Null-Sphere and believes it can "undo" the Shattering, regardless of the cost in lives.
- Kel'Thuz (The Whispering Lich): The master of Oros. He watches the expedition with amusement, using psychic whispers to drive the researchers to madness and betrayal.
The Setting: The Vertical Ruins
- The Muffled Silence: A zone where sound only travels 10 feet, making communication difficult and ambushes easy.
- The Phase-Shift Outer Walls: A barrier that flickers between planes, requiring precise magical "tuning" to pass through.
- The Tomb of the Null-Sphere: A permanent "Mana-Dead Zone" at the spire's peak where the fragment is held by a massive "Null-Iron" Guardian.
Encounters & Branching Paths
- The Barrier Breach (Challenge): Coordinating with researchers to stabilize the Phase-Shift barrier while fending off mutated Phase Spiders.
- The Whispers of Madness (Social/Wisdom): Resisting the psychic offers of Kel'Thuz, who promises to grant the party’s greatest desires if they sabotage the mission.
- The Null-Iron Guardian (Combat): A brutal fight in the mana-dead zone against a construct that regenerates whenever magic is cast nearby.
- The Final Delivery (Moral Choice): Deciding whether to give the sentient fragment to Kigum (creating a weapon), leave it in the vault, or sell it to the highest bidder in Fortune's Lake.
Narrative Outcomes & Loot
- Success (Delivery): The party receives their massive 5,000 gp payout, but they soon see their "patron" using the fragment to silence political rivals.
- Success (Sanctuary): The fragment is left in peace. The world is safer, but the party is hunted by the Kigum Bank for "breach of contract."
- Loot: Fragment of the Null-Sphere (if they keep it; grants Antimagic Field once per day), Manual of Bodily Health, and a Mirror of Mental Prowess.
