The Surface-Traders

The Surface-Traders

The Surface-Traders are a progressive sub-faction within the Sub-Terran Accord who believe that the long-term survival of kobold-kind depends on integration and open trade with the surface world. While the majority of the Accord prefers to remain in the shadows, the Surface-Traders argue that the "Sun-Dwellers" possess resources, technologies, and "cultural variants" that the Deep-Strands desperately need.

Philosophy: Their motto is "The World is One, Above and Below." They view the separation between the subterranean and surface worlds as an artificial barrier that limits the potential of both. By trading refined Deep-Strand minerals and bioluminescent fungi for surface-manufactured components and exotic spices, they hope to create a symbiotic relationship that makes war or "silent sabotage" unnecessary.

Operations: The Surface-Traders operate out of "Transition-Vaults"—hidden outposts located just beneath major surface cities like Steamfort, Aethervale, and Oros. They often employ "Surface-Proxies" (non-kobolds) to handle their more public-facing business, though the most daring among them use magical disguises or "Aether-Veils" to walk the streets themselves.

Internal Conflict: They are frequently at odds with The Deep-Isolationists, who view their desire for integration as a betrayal of kobold sovereignty. The Surface-Traders are often accused of "softening" the Accord and making it vulnerable to surface-dweller greed.

Key Figures:

  • Lira Copperwire: Though technically an independent inventor, she is a hero to the Surface-Traders for her successful ventures in Steamfort.
  • Trade-Master Skrit: The official leader of the sub-faction, known for his "Golden Tongue" and collection of surface-made waistcoats.
