Pure Aether Crystal

Pure Aether Crystal
Legendary, Wondrous Item (Requires Attunement)
Properties
The Pure Aether Crystal is a flawlessly extruded, geometric shard of solidified magical intent. It acts as a conduit between the wielder and the planetary nervous system of Aethervale.
- Arcane Resonator: While holding the crystal, you can use an action to regain one expended spell slot of 5th level or lower. Once used, this property cannot be used again until the next dawn.
- Mycelial Threading: You have advantage on Wisdom (Insight) and Intelligence (Arcana) checks made to interpret the telepathic echoes of the Omnisporangium or to predict tectonic shifts and Aether blooms.
- Engine Overdrive: The crystal can be slotted into any Large or smaller clockwork or steam-powered machine. For 1 hour, the machine operates at triple its normal efficiency and does not require fuel.
- Aether Flash: As an action, you can shatter a portion of the crystal’s resonance. Each creature within 20 feet must make a DC 17 Constitution saving throw or take 8d6 force damage and be blinded until the end of your next turn. Using this feature has a 25% chance of depleting the crystal, turning it into useless glass.
Lore & Origin
These crystals are not mined; they are grown. They are the "white blood cells" of the Omnisporangium, flawlessly extruded within the Deep-Strands to regulate the flow of magic across Aethervale. Each crystal is a concentrated node of the fungal god's own consciousness, designed to stabilize leylines and act as a buffer against the chaotic influence of the Void. To the Sub-Terran Accord, they are sacred relics; to the Steam Wrights Consortium, they are the ultimate battery. They were first discovered by the Aether-Weaver Goblins, who realized that the crystals pulsed in a rhythmic cadence identical to the planet's core.
The Price of Power
The Aether within is too pure for the mortal coil. Whenever you use the Arcane Resonator or Aether Flash property, you must roll on the Wild Magic Surge table. Additionally, prolonged attunement (more than 7 days) causes the "Blue Vein" effect: your veins begin to glow with a faint bioluminescence, and you develop a craving for damp, dark environments. If the crystal is ever destroyed while you are attuned to it, you take 4d10 psychic damage as your mental link to the Mycelium is violently severed.
Rumors & Whispers
- The True Echo (True): If a Pure Aether Crystal is brought near the Heart of the Omnisporangium, it can be used to upload a mortal’s memories into the planetary consciousness, granting a form of digital-fungal immortality.
- The Dragon’s Bait (False): It is whispered in the taverns of Crystal Cove that crushing a Pure Aether Crystal and mixing it with Blue Bile creates a paste that allows a mortal to command the "First Brood" dragons. (In reality, this mixture is highly explosive and usually fatal).
Sight, Sound, and Smell
The crystal emits a shimmering, cerulean glow that dances across the walls in fractal patterns. It produces a rhythmic, low-frequency hum, like the distant hissing of a steam vent or a deep, noble heartbeat. To hold it is to smell the sharp tang of ozone mixed with the ancient, grounding scent of wet earth and prehistoric moss.
NPC: Venda 'Sporelung'
Deep-Delve Merchant & Aether Speculator
"Breathe deep of the blue, traveler; the stone only bites if you’re afraid to bleed. And believe me, the earth has a very long memory for those who don’t pay their debts."
- Ideals: Sustainability. "Take only what the Mycelium offers, or the world will take it back from your cold, dead hands."
- Flaws: Greed. Venda cannot resist the allure of 'Raw Aether,' even when she knows the batch is volatile enough to level a city block.
Markings: The Nursery Glyphs
In the deep caverns where these crystals form, the Aether-Weaver Goblins scratch protective hobo-signs into the stone.
- The Mark: A circle with three descending lines, resembling a weeping eye or a hanging mushroom.
- Translation: "Quiet Feet, Heavy Soul—The Great Mother is Dreaming Here." (A warning that the area is magically volatile and the Omnisporangium is actively monitoring the location).
