Tactics And Technology Of The Swells

Tactics and Technology of the Broad Swells
The Broad Swells have become a testing ground for the most experimental and dangerous technologies in Aethervale. The unique environmental conditions—high humidity, localized mana-interference, and corrosive salt air—have dictated the evolution of warfare in the region.
The Rise of Firearms
While the mages of Kigum look down upon "the toy of the dwarf," firearms have revolutionized mercenary combat.
- The Matchlock and Flintlock: Most common among the rank-and-file. They are valued for their ability to pierce traditional magical barriers that are designed to deflect slower projectiles like arrows.
- Aether-Charged Rounds: The Crimson Company’s specialty. These bullets are etched with micro-runes that ignite upon impact, delivering a burst of thermal or concussive energy.
- The Grapeshot Sweep: Used by naval vessels to clear the decks of enemy ships before boarding. In the Swells, grapeshot is often mixed with powdered cold-iron to disrupt any defensive spellcasting.
Naval Warfare: The "Iron Dance"
Naval engagements in the Swells are rarely simple broadside exchanges.
- The Harpoon-and-Drag: A favorite tactic of the Iron Current. Ships are equipped with massive, Aether-powered harpoons designed to snag an enemy's hull and drag them into range of close-quarters constructs.
- Mana-Vane Manipulation: Skilled "Sea-Singers" (maritime mages) are used to manipulate the localized mana-currents, creating sudden fog banks or tailwinds to grant their fleet a positioning advantage.
- The Fire-Ship Gambit: Sending small, unmanned sloops packed with unstable Aether-crystals and black powder into the heart of an enemy formation.
Specialized Equipment
The Breather-Mask
Essential for boarding actions. These masks use a small Aether-filter to neutralize the toxic "Mana-Mist" that often clings to the surface of the water during a storm.
The Signal-Lantern
Since traditional magical communication (like Sending) can be "jammed" by the natural interference of the Swells, companies use a complex system of multi-colored lanterns and shutters to relay orders across a fleet.
Depth-Chargers
Large, weighted barrels of explosive powder dropped by Bastions to deter the Sea-Wolves and their monstrous mounts. They are timed to detonate at specific depths, creating shockwaves that can crush the lungs of a sea serpent.
The "Cold-Iron" Advantage
Because so many mercenaries face magical threats, the demand for cold-iron has skyrocketed. The "Sunder-Iron" alloy used by the Crimson Company is the gold standard, but cheaper "Salt-Iron" (iron quenched in the mana-heavy waters of the Swells) is a popular alternative for lower-tier mercenaries.
