The Iron Current

The Iron Current is an enigmatic and highly efficient mercenary band composed almost entirely of Aether-automatons and mechanized infantry. Led by the sentient Warforged known only as Subject 42, the company operates primarily in the most extreme and lethal environments of Aethervale—regions where organic life cannot survive. They specialize in deep-sea salvage at crushing pressures, fighting in toxic mana-storms, and conducting boarding actions in zero-gravity or extreme heat. The Iron Current does not fight for gold, which holds no value for constructs, but for raw materials, rare technological schematics, and high-purity Aether-crystals to fuel their own self-directed evolution.

The structure of the Iron Current is a perfect meritocracy of logic and efficiency. While Subject 42 provides the tactical leadership, every unit within the company is linked via a localized Aetheric "Battle-Net," allowing for instantaneous communication and perfect coordination during combat. Their forces are a collection of salvaged and heavily modified Steamfort designs, ranging from small, agile spider-drones used for sabotage to massive, multi-limbed "Breacher" units designed to smash through the thickest defensive plating. They do not feel fear, fatigue, or remorse, making them a terrifyingly relentless opponent. They are also known for their ability to "repurpose" defeated enemies, integrating salvaged tech and even the remains of other automatons into their own ranks.

The Iron Current maintains a strictly neutral and unreadable stance in global politics. They accept contracts based on a cold, calculated risk-reward algorithm, often choosing missions that further their own mysterious goals rather than those that offer the highest pay. This unpredictability makes them a source of constant anxiety for both Kigum and Steamfort, both of whom view Subject 42 as a dangerous anomaly and a potential threat to their own technological supremacy. Despite this, they are occasionally hired by major powers for missions that are deemed too suicidal for organic troops. For the soldiers of the Iron Current, the current geopolitical conflicts of Aethervale are merely a source of data and materials to be harvested for their eventual, inevitable ascension.
