The Valerius Conspiracy

The Valerius Conspiracy in Kigum
Level Range: 1-5 Setting: Aethervale (The High Spire of Kigum)
Background & Objective
A shadow has fallen over Kigum’s High Spire, a shimmering metropolis of brass and magic suspended above the subterranean fungal depths. Lady Seraphina Valerius, a high-ranking officer of the Arcane Guard, has discovered a conspiracy within the city’s security force that threatens the fragile equilibrium between the surface and the Omnisporangium—the sentient planetary fungal network.
A faction calling itself "The Iron Hand" seeks to overthrow the ruling house. They have orchestrated a masterstroke of deception: the systematic fabrication of evidence designed to frame House Valerius for the illicit exploitation of a captured Spore-Goliath. By forging "Black Budget" ledgers and planting trace Aether crystals within the Highspire Estate, the Iron Hand plans to bait the Omnisporangium into a retaliatory "ecological purge." They intend for the Magistrate to be assassinated by the fungal god’s own immune response during the Festival of the First Spark, allowing the Iron Hand to seize power amidst the ensuing environmental collapse. Seraphina, unable to trust her compromised captains, hires the party as "outside specialists" to expose the fraud and prevent a city-wide catastrophe.
Key NPCs & Motivations
Lady Seraphina Valerius
A loyalist who believes the rule of law is the only thing preventing Aethervale from descending into the World-Fire. She is being hunted by her own captains and needs the party to act as her "ghosts" within the city she once protected.
"The law is a silver thread; once broken, the entire tapestry of Kigum unravels into the dark."
H4: Ideals & Flaws
- Ideal: Order. The structures of Kigum protect the weak from the chaos of the wilds.
- Flaw: Inflexible. Her devotion to protocol often blinds her to the necessity of radical change.
Captain Julian (The Iron Hand)
A disgraced officer secretly funded by Steamfort agents. He believes the Valerius family is "soft" and that Kigum must become a fortified military state to survive the escalating Mycelial shifts. He views the Spore-Goliath not as a living creature, but as a political tool.
"The Spire sits too high; it is time it was brought down to the mud where real soldiers bleed."
H4: Ideals & Flaws
- Ideal: Strength. Only the powerful have the right to dictate the survival of the species.
- Flaw: Avarice. His desire for Steamfort’s copper coin outweighs his supposed loyalty to Kigum’s soldiers.
H4: Rumors & Whispers
- True: The Spore-Goliath currently held in the Rusty Bolt warehouse was captured using illegal Steamfort "Suppression Grenades" that disrupt Mycelial threading.
- False: Lord Magistrate Alistair Valerius is secretly a "Whisper-Hulk" sent by the Omnisporangium to spy on the Merchant Guilds.
The Setting: The High Spire
The Crimson Barracks
The headquarters of the Arcane Guard. It is a fortress of rhythmic clockwork and ancient stone, housing the "Black Budget" ledger that reveals the Iron Hand’s purchase of Aether-Resonators used to frame the Magistrate.
H4: Sight, Sound, and Smell
The air is thick with the scent of ozone and floor wax. Beneath the rhythmic hissing of steam pipes, one can hear the constant, metallic clatter of Arcane Guard boots on polished marble. Shimmering red banners hang from the vaulted ceilings, illuminated by the low, amber glow of dimming Aether-lamps.
The Highspire Estate
A labyrinth of wards, secret passages, and luxury suites. The Iron Hand has planted "Blue Bile" canisters in the gardens to ensure the Omnisporangium perceives the estate as a site of necrotic infection.
The Shadows - 'The Rusty Bolt' Warehouse
A derelict industrial district beneath the spire’s foundations. This is where the Iron Hand meets their Steamfort handlers and where the captured Spore-Goliath is being tortured to incite its rage.
H4: Markings
Scratched into the copper plating near the warehouse entrance is a symbol of three overlapping circles with a vertical line through them.
- Translation: "The Earth listens; keep silent." (A warning used by those who fear the Mycelium’s telepathic reach).
Encounters & Branching Paths
- The Barracks Heist (Stealth/Social): Infiltrating the Crimson Barracks. The party must navigate "Mycelial Alarm Wards" that react to aggressive intent. Stealing the ledger is the only way to prove the Aether crystals in the Magistrate's home were purchased by Captain Julian.
- The Warehouse Standoff (Combat): Intercepting a shipment of "Suppression Grenades" at the Rusty Bolt. The party finds the Spore-Goliath bound in rhythmic, copper dampening-chains.
- The Festival of the First Spark (Challenge/Combat): The party must identify Iron Hand assassins in the crowd before they can detonate "Blue Bile" lures that would trigger a Spore-Goliath rampage in the heart of the city.
- The Reluctant Traitor (Social): Discovering that Captain Kaelen’s family is being held hostage by Steamfort agents. The party can choose to rescue them, securing a powerful ally inside the Iron Hand.
Monster: Spore-Goliath (Immune Response Unit)
H4: Ecology
Spore-Goliaths are necro-mycological siege engines deployed by the Omnisporangium to dismantle artificial structures that parasitically drain the world’s leylines. They are composed of hardened fungal chitin and pressurized Blue Bile. They are not inherently evil, but act with the clinical precision of a planetary immune system.
H4: Tactics
A Spore-Goliath begins combat by releasing a Cloud of Rejuvenation, which heals fungal allies but causes The Sighing Sickness in humanoids. It uses its massive, club-like limbs to prioritize the destruction of magical items and Aether-tech, sensing the "drain" they put on the world. If its "Blue Bile" core is ruptured, it explodes in a caustic wave to prevent its essence from being harvested.
Narrative Outcomes & Loot
- Success: The assassination is thwarted and the frame-job is exposed. The Omnisporangium’s wrath is averted, and the Spore-Goliath is released back into the depths. The party is granted high status in Kigum and the "Valerius-Forged" armor.
- Failure: The Magistrate is killed. The Omnisporangium, sensing the "infection" of House Valerius, triggers a tectonic shift that causes the High Spire to tilt, beginning the "Sky-Island Fall." Kigum descends into civil war.
Valerius-Forged Armor (Spell-Tempered Plate)
H4: Lore & Origin
Forged in the heart of the High Spire using a blend of traditional dwarven smithing and Arcane Guard alchemy. The plates are tempered in a bath of neutralized Blue Bile, giving the metal a shimmering, iridescent sheen that shifts between deep violet and copper. It was originally designed for the elite protectors of the Valerius bloodline to withstand the caustic environments of the deep-delves.
Loot Cache:
- Valerius-Forged Armor: Grants resistance to force damage and advantage on saves against Wild Magic surges.
- Signet of the Lord Magistrate: Provides a +2 bonus to Persuasion checks within Kigum.
- Suppression Grenades (3): Aether-tech devices that can temporarily "silence" magic in a 10ft radius for 1 minute.
