The Lithovore Behemoth

The Lithovore Behemoth

level_range: "1-5"

The Lithovore Behemoth of Fortune's Lake

Background & Objective

In the shimmering world of Aethervale, the earth is not merely stone, but a living organism regulated by the vast, fungal intelligence of the Omnisporangium. The Lithovore Behemoth—a fortress-sized organism of biological stone and ancient clockwork—once served as a peaceful custodian of the deep, consuming raw stone to regulate tectonic pressure. However, a recent Wild Magic Storm has catalyzed a catastrophic malfunction.

The storm’s chaotic energy reacted violently with the creature’s Aether-Heart, causing the core to leak Blue Bile, a toxic, magically volatile coolant. This viscous byproduct has invited a parasitic outbreak of Lithovore Brain-Lice, which have seized control of the Behemoth’s simple mind. Driven into a localized frenzy, the Behemoth is now tunneling toward the foundations of Fortune’s Lake Town. If it consumes the town’s magically-infused foundations, the resulting sinkhole will destroy the local economy and trigger a localized "World-Fire" event. Commander Vane of the Crimson Company has issued an emergency Hero’s Bounty to any soul brave enough to enter the beast and stop its heart.

Key NPCs & Motivations

Commander Vane (Crimson Company)

The town’s iron-willed protector, Vane views the Behemoth as a purely industrial threat to be dismantled with brass and blood.

"The line is drawn in the mud of Fortune's Lake; we don't retreat a single inch while that mechanical mountain still breathes."

  • Ideals: Order and Duty. The safety of the citizens outweighs the preservation of the creature.
  • Flaws: Stubbornly refuses to acknowledge the creature's ecological importance to the Omnisporangium.

"Crow-Eye" Jaxon (Vulture Syndicate)

A ruthless crime boss with an eye for "liquid gold." He sees the Behemoth’s destabilized Aether-Heart as the ultimate score.

"The world is ending anyway, friend. Might as well spend the last of the Aether in luxury while the town sinks."

  • Ideals: Opportunity. Everything has a price, even the heart of a god-beast.
  • Flaws: Greed blinds him to the lethal toxicity of the Blue Bile he seeks to harvest.

Venda "Sporelung"

A wandering merchant of the depths who breathes Blue Bile through a copper apparatus. She fears the Behemoth's death will upset the local Mycelial balance.

"You see a monster; I see a broken gear in a grand machine. Careful where you swing that sword."

  • Ideals: Preservation. The Mycelial cycle must continue.
  • Flaws: Deeply paranoid of surface-dwellers and their "clanking" technology.

The Setting: Fortune’s Lake Outskirts

Wastes' Edge

A district of newer buildings and scavenger camps currently being leveled by the Behemoth's seismic stride.

  • Sight, Sound, and Smell: Shimmering dust clouds rise as copper-roofed houses crumble like parchment. The air is thick with the rhythmic, ground-shaking thuds of the creature’s legs and the sharp, metallic hiss of escaping steam. The air reeks of pulverized limestone and the sickly-sweet, ozone scent of raw magic.

The Siege-Works

A defensive line where the Crimson Company has mounted experimental "Aether-Harpoons" on Steamfort Mech-Rigs.

  • Sight, Sound, and Smell: A cacophony of rhythmic clanking and shouting men. Massive copper harpoons glow with a vibrant blue light, ready to pierce the creature's stony hide. The air smells of hot oil, coal smog, and the acrid tang of burnt gunpowder.

The Living Dungeon (Internal)

The Behemoth's interior, a maze of acidic gizzards, clockwork brass gears, and glowing Aether-veins dripping with Blue Bile.

  • Sight, Sound, and Smell: The walls pulse with a low, organic thrumming. Bioluminescent Blue Bile drips from bronze pipes like glowing honey, pooling in the grooves of the beast’s stone ribs. Every few minutes, the entire chamber tilts and groans with a metallic screech.

Rumors & Whispers

  • True: The Behemoth isn't trying to eat the town; the Brain-Lice are piloting it toward the largest concentration of Aether to feed their hive-queen.
  • False: Commander Vane secretly planted the Wild Magic beacons that drew the Behemoth here to justify a higher tax for the Crimson Company.

Markings

  • The Mark of the Maw: A crude spiral scratched into the walls of the Wastes’ Edge, often used by scavengers.
  • Translation: "The earth swallows from the center; move to the hills."

Encounters & Branching Paths

  • The Evacuation of the Edge (Challenge): The party must rescue trapped citizens as the ground liquefies. Parasitic Mites (mutated giant ticks) drop from the Behemoth's hide, hungry for blood-borne Aether.
  • The Harpoon Tactic (Combat/Skill): Players must defend or operate four heavy Aether-Harpoons. Coordinating the shots requires successful Athletics or Intelligence (Tinker's Tools) checks to tether the beast.
  • The Syndicate Sabotage (Social/Combat): Jaxon’s agents attempt to sabotage the harpoon rigs to ensure the Behemoth crashes, making the heart easier to harvest. Players must sniff out the moles among the Crimson Company engineers.
  • The Heart-Strike (Combat): The party enters the Behemoth’s maw. They must navigate the Bile-Ducts to reach the Crystallized Core. There, they face the Lithovore Brain-Lice Queen, a psychic entity that protects the creature's hijacked mind.

Monster Ecology: The Lithovore Behemoth

Ecology

Lithovores are necro-mycological siege engines, ancient "Spore-Goliaths" deployed by the Omnisporangium to recycle stone and minerals. They are symbiotic hybrids of biological tissue, volcanic rock, and "First Brood" clockwork. They do not hunt living prey; they sense Aether-rich minerals and "sieve" the earth to maintain the planet's structural equilibrium.

Tactics

The Behemoth does not recognize humanoids as threats, but as irritants. It uses its Seismic Stomp to clear its legs and vents Blue Bile Steam from its copper exhaust ports to scald attackers. Internally, its "immune system" consists of Lithovore Brain-Lice that use psychic shrieks to stun intruders while Aether-Vein Tentacles attempt to drag them into the acidic gizzards.

Items: Lore & Loot

Crystallized Lithovore Core

  • Lore & Origin: This massive Aether-battery is a fragment of the planet's own lifeblood, solidified over millennia. It hums with the song of the Omnisporangium.
  • Property: Can power a small city for a year or be used to craft high-grade Aether-circuitry for Steamfort mechs.

Crimson Company Commendation

  • Lore & Origin: A heavy brass medal stamped with the seal of Fortune's Lake. It grants the wearer "Hero Status" within the town.
  • Property: Grants advantage on Persuasion checks with local law enforcement and a 10% discount on all mechanical repairs in Fortune's Lake.

Blue Bile Vials

  • Lore & Origin: Harvested from the creature’s cooling system. It is a potent, albeit dangerous, alchemical catalyst.
  • Property: When applied to a weapon, it deals an additional 1d6 force damage, but the wielder must succeed on a DC 12 Constitution save or suffer one level of exhaustion from the toxic fumes.

Narrative Outcomes

  • Success: The Behemoth is quelled or its heart is repaired. The creature retreats into the deep crust to hibernate. The party is granted permanent residence in "Mercenary Row." The town is saved, and the "Blue Bile" spills are contained, preventing a localized mutation plague.
  • Failure: The Behemoth consumes the town center. Fortune's Lake becomes a massive sinkhole. The creature, now fully controlled by the Brain-Lice, moves toward the Western Continent, leaving a trail of "Whisper-Hulks" and crystalline devastation in its wake.
