Heist At The Drift Market

Heist At The Drift Market

level_range: "1-5"

The Drift Market Vault Heist

Background & Objective

The Drift Market, a lawless floating flotilla of smugglers and pirates, hides many secrets. One such secret is a "Blood-Coin"—a rare currency used for high-profile assassination contracts—currently held in the private vault of Quartermaster Thorne. The party is hired by a mysterious benefactor to steal the coin before a contract on a prominent leader can be fulfilled.

Key NPCs & Motivations

  • Quartermaster Thorne: A retired naval officer turned black market kingpin. He values his reputation for "impenetrable security" above all else.
  • The Ghost of the Swells: A legendary thief who failed this heist years ago and now provides the party with intel from the shadows. He wants the party to succeed where he failed to "settle the score."

The Setting: Thorne's Treasury

  • The Floating Docks: A chaotic exterior of swaying bridges and tethered skiffs, guarded by Thorne's "Iron Eye" mercenaries.
  • The Hall of False Floors: A corridor filled with pressure plates that trigger trapdoors leading to the shark-infested waters below.
  • The Vault of Whispers: A soundproofed, reinforced chamber where the Blood-Coin is stored, guarded by a clockwork sentinel.

Encounters & Branching Paths

  • The Gilded Invitation (Social): Posing as wealthy merchants or desperate smugglers to gain access to Thorne’s inner sanctum.
  • The Shadow-Walk (Stealth): Navigating the Hall of False Floors using the intel provided by the Ghost, avoiding the gaze of the clockwork eyes.
  • The Sentinel’s Duel (Combat): Engaging the "Iron-Guardian," a massive clockwork golem that guards the vault door.
  • The Great Escape (Challenge): Once the alarm is raised, the party must navigate the collapsing docks as Thorne’s fleet begins to converge on their position.

Narrative Outcomes & Loot

  • Success: The contract is intercepted, saving the target’s life. The party earns a powerful, unnamed benefactor and a permanent bounty on their heads in the Drift Market.
  • Failure: Thorne captures the party. They must either pay a massive ransom or find a way to escape his floating prison.
  • Loot: The Blood-Coin (can be sold for 10,000 gp or used to "buy" one favor from the Assassin's Guild), Thorne’s Keyring (opens many doors in the Swells), and a Cloak of Elvenkind.
