The Puffball Apothecary

The Puffball Apothecary

The Puffball Apothecary

Locations: Tucked away in the dampest corner of the Kigum Slums, the shop occupies a partially submerged basement beneath a derelict tannery. In later stages of the campaign, Fizig is known to pack his entire inventory into a massive, hollowed-out puffball mushroom pulled by a domesticated giant slug, appearing near the outskirts of Steamfort to trade with desperate survivors.

The Vibe

The shop is a sensory overload of bioluminescence and fermentation. Thick, glowing azure moss carpets the ceiling, dripping a sweet, viscous nectar into mismatched glass vials. The air is heavy with the scent of ozone, wet earth, and spicy ginger. Unlike the eerie, rhythmic humming of the hive-mind found in the Viridian Cradle, the Apothecary is filled with the frantic clicking of Fizig’s tools and the erratic bubbling of "de-sync" vats. It feels less like a place of business and more like a biological rebellion. Shrunken goblin heads—failed experiments in severance—line the shelves, occasionally muttering fragments of the Overmind’s latest thoughts before Fizig shushes them with a spray of vinegar.

Notable Items

  • Azure-Lace Symbiote: A suit of "living" armor woven from hardened mycelial filaments. It provides a +2 bonus to AC and allows the wearer to "blend" into the blue fog of Kigum, granting advantage on Stealth checks. However, for every day it is worn, the user must roll against the Spore Infection Tracking System; the armor feeds on the wearer’s individuality to maintain its structural integrity.
  • The Severance Tincture: A foul-smelling, bubbling black liquid. Drinking this grants the user "The Rogue Pulse," rendering them invisible to Mycelial Stalkers and the sensory network of Mycelia-Zul for one hour. The side effect is a crushing sense of loneliness and a temporary -4 penalty to all Charisma checks as the user's "social tether" is violently frayed.
  • Fizig’s Boom-Cap Satchel: A collection of volatile fungal spores contained in fragile ceramic spheres. When thrown, they release a cloud of hallucinogenic dust that forces enemies to fight imaginary "Flesh-Titans," effectively inflicting the Confused status.
  • Memory-Marrow Paste: A spreadable fungus cultivated from the "old growth" of the Viridian Cradle. Consuming a spoonful allows the player to experience a random memory from a long-dead dwarf of Steamfort, providing clues to the city’s ventilation puzzles, but increases Spore Infection Tier by 1.

Trading with Fizig

Fizig has no use for the "shiny flat-circles" (gold) of the surface world. Having been severed from the collective consciousness of Mycelia-Zul, he suffers from a constant, aching hunger for new information and unique individuality.

The Rules of Exchange:

  1. Sensory Echoes: Fizig prefers to trade for "Unique Experiences." A player can pay for items by allowing Fizig to use a "Memory-Siphon" (a specialized leech-fungus) to drain a specific, potent memory from their mind. The player loses access to that memory (and perhaps a skill proficiency or a piece of lore), but the rarity of the memory dictates the value of the trade.
  2. Scrap from the Deep: Fizig is obsessed with the "Metal-Kin" (Dwarves). He will offer deep discounts for any salvaged clockwork components or rusted blueprints recovered from the upper levels of Steamfort.
  3. The Hive-Price: If a player’s Spore Infection Tier is 3 or higher, Fizig becomes nervous. He will only trade with them if they agree to wear a "Noise-Dampening Gourd" on their head to prevent the Overmind from "eavesdropping" through their infected synapses.
