Spore Infection Tracking System

Spore Infection Tracking System

DM Resource: Spore Infection Tracking System

This system tracks the progression of Mycelia-Zul’s influence on the player characters. As the "Azure Awakening" spreads, the infection acts as both a gateway to the hive-mind and a tether to the World-Root.

I. The Infection Tracker

The Spore Count (SC) is a numerical value (0–50). Players gain SC through environmental exposure, combat with Spore-Coughers, or using tainted items.

TierSC RangeStateMechanical BoonsMechanical Banes
00PureImmune to Hive-Mind detection.Cannot use Mycelial artifacts.
11–10Sensitized+2 to Perception (Smell/Taste).Frequent sneezing; Disadvantage on Stealth.
211–20GerminatedCan sense Goblins within 60ft.Disadvantage on Saves vs. Charmed.
321–30SproutedLimited Telepathy (Goblins only).-2 to Wisdom Saving Throws.
431–40RootedResistance to Poison/Acid damage.Disadvantage on all Wisdom Saving Throws.
541–50OvergrownAccess to Hive-Mind (True Seeing).PC becomes an NPC under DM control.

II. Environmental Exposure & Vector Tables

Infection is not a one-time event but a gradual accumulation. Use these tables to determine SC increases.

Sources of Infection (d10)

1-2Inhaling the Blue Fog of Kigum (per hour)+1 SC
3-4Struck by a Spore-Cougher Burst+1d4 SC

7-8Wounded by a Mycelial Stalker (Natural 20)+1d8 SC

Atmospheric Conditions: The Azure Fog

Heavy HazeVision limited to 60ft; blue spores visible in light.SC +1 per 4 hours of exposure.

The SpawningThick, particulate-heavy air; visibility 10ft.SC +1d4 per hour; DC 15 Save or hallucinatory visions.

III. The Hive-Mind Connection

As the SC rises, the PC begins to "hear" the World-Root. Use these d12 prompts to roleplay the encroaching consciousness of Mycelia-Zul.

d12The Whisper of Mycelia-Zul
1"Why do you struggle against the stillness?"
2"The Rusted Deep is but a scab on the world's skin."
3"Join the choir; your voice is the only one missing."
4"Steamfort is a furnace of dying dreams. Let us cool it."
5"The Goblins are your brothers, born of the same rot."
6"Lady Elara seeks a cage; we offer a garden."
7"Thordin's mind is a beautiful, fractured map."
8"Individualism is a lonely poison. Drink of the Root."
9"Your heartbeat is too loud. Let it sync with ours."
10"The First Spawning was not a mistake; it was an awakening."
11"Fizig is a broken limb. He will be re-absorbed."
12"Surrender. The blue peace is eternal."

IV. Fungal Mutation Table (Tier 3+)

Upon reaching Tier 3 (SC 21+), physical changes manifest. Roll or choose one for the player.

  1. Azure Veins: Glowing blue-green tracks appear under the skin, pulsing in the dark.
  2. Spore-Breath: A fine blue powder escapes the mouth when the character speaks or sighs.
  3. Velvet Skin: Patches of skin turn soft and moss-like, providing natural camouflage in forests (+2).
  4. Ocular Bloom: The white of one eye is replaced by a solid, bioluminescent cyan.
  5. Root-Step: Tiny tendrils grow from the soles of the feet, making the PC harder to knock prone.
  6. The Hum: The PC constantly emits a low-frequency vibration that calms nearby non-hostile beasts.

V. Recovery & Suppression

Total removal of the infection is nearly impossible without the Cleansing of Steamfort, but temporary relief exists.

  • Fizig’s Distillate: A bitter tonic sold at The Puffball Apothecary. Reduces SC by 1d6. Cost: 50gp.
  • Geothermal Steam Bath: Spending 1 hour in a Steamfort vent. Reduces SC by 1d4. Risk: Extreme heat exhaustion.
  • The Severing Ritual: Requires a piece of a Spore-Born Titan. Resets SC to 10 but causes 48 hours of Blindness as the connection is ripped away.
