Hazardous Economy

The Hazardous Economy of the Wastes
The Mana Wastes are a death trap, but they are also the most profitable region in Aethervale. The engine of this economy is the Corrupted Aether-Crystal, often referred to by locals as "Void-Shards."
Void-Shards: High Risk, High Energy
Unlike the refined crystals of Kigum or the raw coal-like fuel of Steamfort, Void-Shards are saturated with the chaotic energies of the Age of Ruin.
- Volatility: A single Void-Shard can power a skyship for a month, but if its containment fails, it could level a city block.
- The Draw: Despite the danger, certain industries in the Eastern Continent—specifically those dealing in forbidden transmutation and "unbound" engines—will pay ten times the price of a standard crystal for a high-grade Void-Shard.
The Scavenger's Market (Fortune's Lake)
Fortune's Lake Town serves as the primary clearing house for these crystals. Because the trade is technically illegal under the Accord of the Seven, it operates in the shadows.
- The Weigh-In: Most trade happens in "The Docks," a series of fortified warehouses where crystals are graded based on their "Lumen-Decay."
- Laundering: Baroness Vane is rumored to have a system for "scrubbing" the magical signature of these shards, allowing them to be sold to unwitting buyers as high-end "experimental" fuel.
The Physical Cost: The Breath of the Void
Long-term exposure to the Wastes and their crystals leads to a degenerative condition known as The Breath of the Void.
- Stage One: Chronic coughing, metallic taste in the mouth, and faint glowing of the veins in the extremities.
- Stage Two: Auditory hallucinations (often described as "the hum of the void") and minor gravity-warping around the person.
- Stage Three: The "Crystal Blight"—the victim's own internal Aether begins to crystallize, eventually turning them into a living statue of volatile glass.
Economic Tiers
- Common Scraps: $100 - $500 gold. Used for low-end enchantments.
- Vein-Cores: $2,000 - $10,000 gold. Can fund an entire expedition.
- Artifact-Grade: Priceless. Items salvaged from the ruined capital that often end up in the hands of the Whispering Lich's agents or the most powerful collectors in Aethervale.
