Landmark: The Crystal Chasms

Far below the Deep-Mines, at the edge of the known tunnels, lies the Crystal Chasms. This vertical cave system is considered one of the most beautiful—and most deadly—locations in the Southern Continent.

The Resonant Forest

The Chasms are filled with massive, vertical pillars of translucent, sky-blue crystal. These crystals are naturally resonant; they capture the sounds of the mountain (the shifting of plates, the flow of magma) and amplify them into a haunting, melodic "song" that can be heard for miles.

  • The Danger: The "Song of the Chasms" is not just sound; it is a physical vibration. Travelers who stay too long without ear protection often suffer from internal bleeding or permanent madness as their own bones begin to vibrate in sympathy with the crystals.

The Floating Shards

Due to the high concentration of Aether-inert minerals, gravity in the Chasms is noticeably weaker. Large shards of crystal often break off and float in the air, creating a three-dimensional platforming nightmare for anyone trying to descend.

Key Features

1. The Bridge of Glass

A natural arch of crystal that spans the widest part of the Chasm. It is perfectly transparent, making the 2,000-foot drop below visible to anyone brave enough to cross.

2. The Whispering Grotto

A small chamber where the resonance is curiously absent. It is used as a "Safe House" by explorers and smugglers, though many claim the silence there is even more unsettling than the song.

Resources and Hazards

  • Resonant Quartz: Highly prized by the bards of Kigum and the engineers of Steamfort. It is used to create long-range communication devices.
  • Shard-Ghouls: The remains of explorers who died in the Chasms. Their bodies have been slowly replaced by crystalline growth, turning them into mindless, razor-sharp predators.

The Bottomless Pit

No one has ever reached the "bottom" of the Crystal Chasms. Some believe it leads directly to the Broad Swells, while others think it is a gateway to a "Mirror-World" made entirely of crystal and light.
