The Wastes Scavenger Hunt

The Wastes Scavenger Hunt
Background & Objective
In the shimmering, unstable expanse of Aethervale's Mana Wastes, the ground does not merely sit; it breathes. A massive aether-storm—a violent discharge of the planet’s nervous system—has recently torn through the region, exposing a jagged field of Raw Aether Crystals. These crystals are the lifeblood of the Omnisporangium, the sentient fungal god residing in the subterranean depths. To the world above, however, they are the ultimate fuel for the steam-engines and aether-tech of the industrial age.
The Scavenger Guilds have declared a "Glint-Rush," a lawless free-for-all. Scrap, a young, brass-adorned scavenger with more ambition than sense, has been commissioned by a wealthy collector to secure a massive haul from the newly opened Crystal Grottos. Desperate to prove his worth, Scrap hires the party to help him outpace The Drifter, a cold-eyed veteran of the wastes who views the current storm-wake as his personal retirement fund. The party must navigate a landscape of hissing steam, rhythmic tectonic shifts, and the aggressive immune response of the planet itself.
Key NPCs & Motivations
Scrap
A frantic young man covered in copper grease and soot, Scrap represents the new wave of industrial scavengers. He views the Wastes as a ladder to be climbed.
"Brass and bone, it’s all we’ve got out here! If we don’t grab the light while it’s sparking, the smog’s gonna swallow us whole."
- Ideals & Flaws: Scrap believes in meritocracy—that the fastest hand deserves the gold. However, his reckless greed often blinds him to the structural instability of the caverns he explores.
The Drifter
A man of few words, clad in lead-lined duster coats and sporting a flickering, cracked clockwork ocular enhancement. He is rumored to be a disgraced former member of the Vulture Syndicate.
"The Wastes don’t care if you’re a legend, kid. They only care if you’re fast enough to outrun the rot."
- Ideals & Flaws: He follows a strict code of wasteland survival: leave no trace, take only what you can carry. His flaw is a deep-seated cynicism that leads him to abandon allies the moment the "Blue Bile" starts flowing.
The Setting: The Mana Wastes
The Storm’s Wake
A landscape of scorched earth and shimmering air where the laws of physics are suggestions.
- Sight: Violent arcs of purple lightning dancing between copper-rich spires; the horizon blurred by a prismatic heat haze.
- Sound: The rhythmic, metallic clanging of distant derelict machinery caught in the wind; the low, subsonic hum of the earth.
- Smell: The sharp, ozone tang of spent magic and the heavy, sulfurous scent of hissing steam vents.
The Crystal Grottos
Deep fissures that descend into the upper layers of the Deep-Strands, where the Omnisporangium’s mycelial threads meet the stone.
- Sight: Walls pulsating with soft blue light; jagged clusters of Aether Crystals growing like frozen lightning.
- Sound: A wet, crystalline crunching underfoot; the distant, echoing 'thrum-thrum' of the planet’s heartbeat.
- Smell: The sweet, cloying aroma of telepathic spores mixed with the caustic, vinegar-like scent of Blue Bile.
The Scavenger Camp
A precarious cluster of canvas tents and reinforced steam-carriages.
- Markings: Scratched into the main gate is a series of three interlocking circles with a slash through them.
- Translation: "Living Earth Below—Do Not Silence the Hum." (A warning from the Aether-Weaver Goblins that the area is prone to tectonic "surgery").
Encounters & Branching Paths
The Rival Race (Challenge)
The party must pilot modified land-skiffs across the glass-flats. Using Bounded Accuracy, players might use Dexterity (Land Vehicles) to steer through steam-geysers or Strength (Athletics) to manually crank the aether-intakes. The Drifter’s crew uses "Siphon-Hooks" to slow the party down.
The Grotto Descent (Skill Challenge)
Rappelling into the fissures requires navigating pockets of Blue Bile—a volatile, bioluminescent waste product of the Mycelium. Contact with the bile may cause temporary mutations or trigger a Wild Magic Surge (see Thematic Rules).
The Mutated Guardians (Combat)
Crystal-Infused Scorpions (Planetary Immune System).
- Tactics: These monstrosities use their translucent carapaces to Blend into the crystal formations (Hide as a bonus action). They target creatures carrying the most Raw Aether first, attempting to grapple them with pincers before delivering a sting that injects "Aether-Salt," potentially paralyzing the target.
- Ecology: These are not natural beasts but "biochemical drones" created by the Omnisporangium. They consume necrotic energy and store Raw Aether in their tails to stabilize the surrounding leyline pressure.
The Camp Betrayal (Social/Combat)
The Vulture Syndicate attempts to seize the haul. Players must use the camp’s industrial environment—leveraging steam pipes and pneumatic lifts—to fend off the attackers.
Rumors & Whispers
The Crystal Grottos
- True Rumor: The grottos aren't just caves; they are "wounds" where the planet is trying to scab over a void-leak.
- False Rumor: If you eat a Raw Aether Crystal, you can hear the thoughts of the Mirage-King and gain eternal life. (In reality, this causes immediate Aether-Blight).
The Drifter
- True Rumor: He once worked for Venda 'Sporelung', and his clockwork eye is actually a piece of Sub-Terran Accord technology.
- False Rumor: He is an avatar of the Ash-Herald, sent to ensure the World-Fire begins in the Wastes.
Items & Loot
Raw Aether Crystals
- Lore & Origin: These crystals are the solidified essence of Aethervale’s magical circulation. They are harvested by the Omnisporangium to mend the "Veiled Cortex." When removed, the surrounding area becomes geologically unstable, as if the planet is "feeling" the loss.
- Mechanic: Can be used as a material component to cast any 1st-level spell without consuming a spell slot, but the caster must roll on the Wild Magic Surge table.
Scavenger Survival Tech
- Lore & Origin: Modified by the Sub-Terran Accord and traded through back-channels, these brass-and-glass goggles allow the wearer to see "Aether-Drift"—the invisible currents of magic that precede a storm.
Narrative Outcomes
- Success: Scrap ascends within the Guilds, eventually becoming a bridge to Grand Shaman Glokk of the Aether-Weaver Goblins. The party gains a reputation as "Planetary Surgeons" or "Master Scavengers."
- Failure: The Drifter claims the haul for the Obsidian Scale, unknowingly helping Aurelius the Golden weaken the planetary wards. Scrap is left destitute, and the party is marked as enemies of the Vulture Syndicate.
