The Great Mushroom Race

The Great Mushroom Race

The Great Mushroom Race

Location: The Deep-Strands, Sub-Terran Accord Level Range: 1-3

Background & Objective

Deep beneath the crust of Aethervale, where the shimmering veins of the Omnisporangium pulse with raw magical energy, the kobolds of the Sub-Terran Accord maintain a precarious balance between industrial progress and ecological sanctity. Annually, the Accord hosts the "Great Mushroom Race," a high-stakes competition through the hollowed-out Mycelial tubes—sacred, translucent tracks that act as the planetary nervous system's protective casing.

The party has been hired by a nervous representative of the Steam Wrights Consortium to ensure that "Copper-Shell Corrie," a giant armored snail laden with experimental pneumatic boosters, wins the race—or at least survives the inevitable sabotage from the Ironbeard Syndicate. However, the stakes have recently escalated; Grand Warren-Master Zik-Zik has announced that the winners will bypass all political bureaucracy to earn a private audience with the elusive Grand Shaman Glokk of the Aether-Weaver Goblins.

The Gimmick: Racing Mechanics

The race takes place within the Deep-Strands, where the ground is slick with Blue Bile—the caustic, bioluminescent coolant of the fungal god.

  • Momentum & Slime: Players must manage a "Momentum" pool. High speeds grant bonuses to bypass Tunnel Worms but increase the DC of Animal Handling checks on tight turns.
  • Aether-Boosting: Racing snails can consume "Aether-Dust" scattered on the track for a burst of speed, triggering a roll on a simplified Wild Magic Surge table.
  • Sabotage: Opposing racers utilize Grease spells, copper-wire tripwires, and pressurized steam-vents to dislodge rivals from the Mycelial walls.

Tactical Combat & Challenges

  • Environmental Hazards: Pockets of Blue Bile can cause rapid mutation or dissolve snail shells. Navigating these requires a DC 13 Wisdom (Survival) check.
  • Snail-Eating Tunnel Worms: These predators are attracted to the rhythmic vibrations of the racing snails.
  • The Obsidian Scale Saboteurs: Cultists may attempt to collapse a section of the Mycelial tube to weaken the planetary wards.

Monster: Giant Armored Racing Snail

Tactics

The snails are trained to use their 'Crushing Slumber'—dropping their weight onto any Tunnel Worms that emerge from the track walls. They prioritize staying within the Blue Bile grooves to maintain lubrication, using their 'Hissing Steam-Vent' (if modified by kobolds) to repel boarders.

Ecology

Giant snails are the primary beasts of burden for the Sub-Terran Accord. They are uniquely resistant to the caustic nature of Blue Bile, feeding on the necrotic magic filtered out by the Omnisporangium. Their shells are often reinforced with copper plating and Aether-glass by kobold smiths.

Key Figures

Grand Warren-Master Zik-Zik

"The gears of the Accord turn on the slime of the swift! Keep the pressure high and the bile flowing!"

Ideals & Flaws

  • Ideal: Order. The subterranean world must function like a perfectly timed clockwork engine to protect the Great Mycelium.
  • Flaw: Greed. He is easily swayed by rare surface-world alloys and vintage steam-valves.

Grand Shaman Glokk

"We are the threads, we are the weave, we are the breath of the world. Why do you run when the earth stays still?"

Ideals & Flaws

  • Ideal: Preservation. Every action must serve the health of the Omnisporangium.
  • Flaw: Cryptic. He speaks in pluralities and metaphors that even his own acolytes struggle to interpret.

The Deep-Strands (Race Track)

Sight, Sound, and Smell

The air is heavy with the scent of ozone and damp, ancient earth. Shimmering blue light pulses through the translucent Aether-glass walls of the tubes, revealing the massive, rhythmic throbbing of the fungal filaments outside. The silence of the deep is shattered by the rhythmic hissing of pneumatic valves and the wet, heavy thud of giant mollusks hitting the track at high speeds.

Rumors & Whispers

  • True: The snails aren't just racing; their movement generates the kinetic energy required to pump Blue Bile away from sensitive Aether nurseries.
  • False: The race is rigged by the Omnisporangium itself to identify which surface-dwellers are tasty enough to be converted into Whisper-Hulks.

Markings

Scratched into the copper plating near the starting line is a recurring symbol: a spiral ending in a jagged lightning bolt.

  • Translation: "Warning: High-Pressure Aether Leak Ahead. Do Not Ignite."

Narrative Outcomes & Loot

Winning the race secures the party’s reputation within the Sub-Terran Accord. Beyond the political favor, they are granted a private audience with Grand Shaman Glokk, who reveals the first signs of the Sighing Sickness spreading in the upper tunnels—a plot hook leading directly into Act I of the Omnisporangium Cycle.

Item: The Accord’s Valve-Ring

Lore & Origin

Forged by Zik-Zik’s personal mechanics, these rings are crafted from salvaged Aether-glass and copper gears. They were originally designed to allow kobold engineers to manually vent excess Blue Bile from the Deep-Strands without suffering chemical burns.

  • Mechanics: Grants resistance to Acid damage. Once per long rest, the wearer can cast Fog Cloud, but the vapor smells strongly of fungal spores and machine oil.
