The Barnacle Pier

The Barnacle Pier
Overview & Aesthetic
The Barnacle Pier is the main docking facility for Drift-Haven, consisting of a series of large, heavily reinforced driftwood platforms tethered to the outermost roots of the Mother-Tree. It is the first point of contact for any ship entering the shantytown and serves as the primary defensive perimeter for the root-level community.
The pier is a chaotic and noisy location, covered in a thick layer of barnacles, kelp-residue, and salt-crust. The aesthetic is one of rugged maritime industry: massive mooring-posts made from ship-masts, heavy iron chains, and rows of specialized cranes for unloading scavenged cargo.
History & Lore
The pier was built by the Mist-Whiskers after the Great Storm of 2AR, which destroyed several of the town’s smaller floating platforms. It was designed to be as sturdy as possible, using iron beams scavenged from a Steamfort merchant-wreck to reinforce the wooden piles. For generations, the pier has served as the gatekeeper of Drift-Haven, witnessing the arrival of countless shipwrecks and a few brave (or lost) merchant vessels from the mainland.
Points of Interest
- The Harbormaster’s Watch: A small, fortified shack at the end of the pier where the Drift-Watch coordinates the movements of incoming ships.
- The Heavy-Lift Crane: A massive, steam-powered winch (repurposed from a dwarven submersible) used to haul heavy shipwreck sections out of the water.
- The Scavenger’s Quay: A specialized section of the pier where "Root-Divers" like Scavenger Grix unload their latest finds.
- The Welcome-Sign: A weather-beaten piece of hull-plating with "Drift-Haven: All Are Welcome, None May Leave (Until the Tide Permits)" painted on it in several languages.
Local Factions & NPCs
- The Drift-Watch: Maintain a permanent guard-post here to inspect incoming ships and enforce the town’s laws.
- First Mate Barnaby: Often found here, overseeing the mooring of the Sea-Whiskers and coordinating with the harbormaster.
- Captain Squeak: A frequent visitor, using the pier to trade information and ship parts with other captains.
- Mist-Turtles: Often gather near the pier, attracted by the scraps of food thrown into the water by sailors.
Environmental Hazards / Mechanics
- Barnacle Hazard: The pier's surfaces are covered in sharp barnacles. Characters who are knocked prone on the pier take 1d4 piercing damage.
- Slippery Seaweed: The lower levels of the pier are covered in kelp. Moving across these areas is difficult terrain and requires a DC 11 Acrobatics check to avoid falling into the water.
- Strong Tides: Every 4 hours, the tide can rise or fall by 10 feet. This can leave ships stranded on the root-beds or make certain sections of the pier inaccessible.
