The Vertical Trade

The Vertical Trade
The Vertical Trade is the complex and vital economic exchange between the Briar-Kin (Canopy-dwellers) and the Mist-Whiskers (Root-dwellers) of The Shrouded Boughs. Because the forest is split into two distinct ecosystems, each kinship produces resources that are essential to the other, making their society inherently symbiotic.
The Exchange of Goods
- From the Canopy (Downwards): The Briar-Kin provide high-quality dyes, aether-infused acorns, fresh fruit, and specialized "Iron-Wood" lumber. They also export the silk used for sails and mystical robes.
- From the Roots (Upwards): The Mist-Whiskers provide salt-cured fish, rare deep-water minerals, and—most importantly—scavenged "Surface-World" artifacts. They also harvest the "Singing Moss" and various alchemical spores found only in the dark depths.
The Logistics of the Lift
Moving goods hundreds of feet vertically through a dense mangrove forest is no small feat. The Muridae have developed several ingenious methods to facilitate the trade:
- The Sky-Hooks: Large, winch-operated platforms powered by either giant beetles or small aether-motors scavenged from shipwrecks.
- The Spore-Lifts: Specialized "floating" baskets that use the natural buoyancy of certain forest spores to ascend or descend.
- Leaf-Kite Couriers: For small, high-priority items, glidists from Ardor can carry cargo directly to the decks of Drift-Haven.
Market Dynamics
The primary centers for the Vertical Trade are the Leaf-Kite Docks in the canopy and the Barnacle Market at sea level. Market-Master Pip oversees the distribution and ensures that the trade remains balanced, though there is constant (mostly friendly) rivalry between the two kinships over the perceived value of their respective goods.
