The Legend of the Mother-Tree's Seed

The Legend of the Mother-Tree's Seed
Among the Muridae (Mousefolk), the origin of their forest home is not just a biological event, but a story of divine intervention and extreme endurance. The Legend of the Mother-Tree's Seed is the foundational myth that explains the birth of The Shrouded Boughs and the unique relationship between the Mousefolk and the colossal mangrove.
The Seed's Journey
The legend tells of the Age of Ruin, when the terrestrial lands were being swallowed by the Great Flood. While other races sought refuge on mountain peaks, the Mousefolk followed a vision from The Great Owl. She led their ancestors to a single, oversized mangrove seed—the "First Acorn"—floating upon a current of pure, raw aether. The Muridae lashed their small driftwood rafts to the seed and rode it for weeks across the churning and predatory ocean.
The Taking of Root
Eventually, the seed struck a shallow, magically-infused reef in the Boundary Ocean. As the Muridae ancestors watched in awe, the seed did not simply rot or wash away; instead, it began to grow with supernatural speed. In a single night, its roots reached the seabed and its trunk rose hundreds of feet into the air. This growth was fueled by the raw aetheric energy of the reef and the protective aura of the Great Owl.
The Mist's First Breath
As the tree’s first leaves unfurled, the Mist-Weaver (the spirit of the forest) breathed the first protective fog into existence. This mist was not just to hide the tree, but to shield the tiny, exhausted Mousefolk from the predatory gulls and the storms that followed the flood. The Muridae declared the tree to be their "Mother," and swore a life-vow to protect its heart in exchange for the sanctuary its branches provided.
Symbolism and Modern Ritual
The "First Acorn" is a central symbol in Muridae art and jewelry. It represents the potential for great growth from humble beginnings and the importance of resilience. Every year, during the Festival of the Seed, young Muridae from across the forest gather at The Mother-Root Shrine to share this legend and to reaffirm their ancestral vow to the Mother-Tree.
