Muridae Shipwreck Scavenging

Shipwreck Scavenging is the primary industry of the Mist-Whiskers and the source of much of the "Tall Race" technology found within The Shrouded Boughs. Due to its unique location and the magical properties of the Mother-Tree's roots, the archipelago acts as a natural net for debris and vessels caught in the currents of the Boundary Ocean.

The Art of the Dive

Scavenging is a dangerous profession that requires extreme physical stamina and an intimate knowledge of the root-labyrinth. Elite scavengers like Scavenger Grix are known as "Root-Divers." They use specialized equipment, such as aether-lanterns and kelp-weighted diving belts, to explore the submerged hulls of galleons and airships that have become wedged in the mangroves.

The Prize of the Wrecks

What the Mousefolk look for in shipwrecks differs significantly from what a human pirate might seek:

  1. Metal Scrap: Iron and steel are rare in the forest and are highly prized for forging Needle-Rapiers and reinforcing structures.
  2. Aether-Components: Even broken aether-stabilizers or motors can be repurposed by skilled wrights like Master Wright Lira.
  3. Fabrics and Sails: Ship-canvas is exceptionally durable and is used to build everything from tents to leaf-kites.
  4. Information: Maps, charts, and ship logs are traded to Elder Thorne for his library, helping the Muridae track the movements of the world outside.

Cultural Taboos

Despite their pragmatism, the Muridae have strict laws regarding scavenging. It is strictly forbidden to scavenge from a ship that still contains the spirits of its crew—a belief that stems from their reverence for the Great Owl. Any vessel that is deemed "Haunted" or "Lost" is left to the Mist-Stalkers, who are said to guard the memories of the dead.
