The Merchants Wharf Kigum

The Merchants Wharf Kigum

The Merchant's Wharf (Kigum)

Type: City District / Commercial Hub Location: The lower levels of Kigum, along the canals and the harbor.

The Merchant's Wharf, also known as the "Coin Quarter," is the economic engine of Kigum. It is a sprawling maze of canals, warehouses, bustling marketplaces, and international trade offices. This district is where goods from across Aethervale—from the iron of Steamfort to the silks of the Southern Continent—are bought, sold, and taxed. The air here is a thick cocktail of smells: salt water, exotic spices, wood smoke, and the faint, ozone-scent of the refined Aether-crystals that power the district's many mechanical cranes and lifts.

The Wharf is a melting pot of cultures and professions. Merchants in fine robes rub shoulders with soot-stained dockworkers, griffin handlers, and weary sailors from the Broad Swells. The "Silver Exchange," a massive open-air market, is the site of constant, high-stakes negotiation. Despite its commercial focus, the Wharf is also a place of great inequality, as the wealth of the merchant kings contrasts sharply with the poverty of the laborers who keep the district running. The "Griffin Roost," located near the harbor, is the primary hub for aerial transport and logistics.

Plot Hooks:

  • The Counterfeit Crystals: A large shipment of counterfeit Aether-crystals has entered the market, causing several industrial accidents. The Merchant's Council hires the party to find the source of the fakes.
  • The Wharf-Rat Gang: A new, highly organized gang is shaking down merchants for "protection money." The party must go undercover as traders to draw them out and dismantle their operation.
  • The Sunken Cargo: A merchant ship carrying a rare and highly volatile alchemical ingredient has sunk in the harbor. The party must perform an underwater recovery before the substance leaks and corrupts the city's water supply.
