Portable Aether-Siphon

Portable Aether-Siphon
Type: Wondrous Item Rarity: Very Rare
The Portable Aether-Siphon is one of the most controversial and highly-guarded technologies of the Sub-Terran Accord. A handheld device resembling a complex brass telescope tipped with a pulsating violet crystal, the siphon is designed to "bleed" energy directly from the world's Ley-lines. This energy is then stored in internal "Aether-Cells" for later use.
While the Accord officially uses these devices to maintain the Deep-Strand network's power levels, their portability makes them a favorite tool for saboteurs and adventurous engineers. A single siphon can power an entire kobold outpost for a month—or be used to catastrophically overload a surface-world machine.
The "Illegal" Edge: Because the siphon actively "drains" the world's natural magical flow, its use is considered a crime of the highest order by the Arcane Ascendancy and most surface governments. The Accord keeps the production of these devices extremely limited, with each unit being personally serialized and tracked by Master Engineer Clank.
Risk and Reward: Tapping into a Ley-line is a delicate process. If the user's focus wavers, the raw magical energy can "back-flow" into the device, resulting in a violent explosion or a localized wild-magic surge. Despite this danger, the ability to recharge Aether-powered equipment on the fly makes the Portable Aether-Siphon a "must-have" for any kobold team operating far from the safety of the Deep-Strands.
