The Leviathans Wake

The Leviathan’s Wake in the Broad Swells
Level Range: 1-5 Tone: High Fantasy / Steampunk Theme: Ecological Collapse vs. Industrial Greed
Background & Objective
A series of "Bastion-class" merchant vessels—the pride of the Steam Wrights Consortium—have been systematically hunted and shredded in the Broad Swells. Survivors speak of a massive, multi-limbed shape in the water: an Abyssal Leviathan mutated by a raw Aether-leak in the Abyssal Trench. To the Merchant Guild, it is a maritime disaster. To the Omnisporangium, the subterranean fungal god, this beast is a vital "leech," drawn to the surface to consume the excess Aether-slick leaking from the planet’s wounded crust.
The Merchant Guild has placed a massive bounty on the beast’s head, viewing its eradication as the only way to restore trade. However, the party soon discovers that the Leviathan is the only thing preventing a parasitic fungal blight from rising from the trench to the surface. The players must choose: claim the gold and risk an ecological catastrophe, or aid the "monster" and face the wrath of the industrial powers.
Key NPCs & Motivations
Captain Silas Trench
A veteran monster hunter and high-ranking member of the Ironbeard Syndicate. Silas lost his ship, the Brass Sovereign, and forty men to the Leviathan. He is a man of gears and salt, sporting a pneumatic prosthetic arm powered by a flickering Aether-cell.
"The sea doesn’t forgive, and neither do I. Prime the pneumatic launchers—I want to see that thing bleed blue."
- Ideals: Justice. Those who destroy must be destroyed in turn.
- Flaws: Obsession. His need for vengeance outweighs the safety of his current crew.
Xylira the Emerald Dreamer
A majestic Green Dragon who serves as a proxy for the Omnisporangium. She views the mutated Leviathan not as a beast, but as a "divine evolution"—a mobile immune cell created to stabilize the Aether-leak.
"You see a monster; I see the planet’s white blood cells. Do not sever the vein, little mortals, or we shall all drown in the infection."
- Ideals: Preservation. The world’s equilibrium must be maintained at any cost.
- Flaws: Arrogance. She views humanoid lives as fleeting and inconsequential compared to the Mycelial Cycle.
The Setting: The Abyssal Trench
The Churning Surface
The gateway to the Broad Swells, where the ocean is white with foam and high-speed currents.
- Sight, Sound, and Smell: The rhythmic hiss of steam-engines struggling against the gale; the smell of ozone and brine; the sight of jagged reefs rising from the spray like the teeth of a drowned god.
The Bioluminescent Depth
The waters near the trench where the Aether-leak has turned everything a pulsing, toxic purple.
- Sight, Sound, and Smell: A silent, shimmering world where floating particles of Blue Bile glow like underwater stars; the muffled thrumming of tectonic shifts; the metallic tang of raw magic on the tongue.
The Sunken Graveyard
A field of shipwrecks at the trench's edge where the Leviathan keeps its "hoard" of undigested cargo and bones.
- Sight, Sound, and Smell: Copper hulls crushed like tin cans; the eerie, rhythmic clanking of a bell on a sunken buoy; the pungent, earthy scent of subterranean fungi blooming in the rot.
Markings
Scratched into the wreckage of the Sunken Graveyard or carved into the rocks by Sub-Terran Accord scouts are recurring symbols.
- The Mark: Three wavy lines bisected by a vertical fungal stalk.
- Translation: "The Deep-Breather feeds here; let the Bile pass or be consumed."
Rumors & Whispers
- True: The Leviathan isn't eating the sailors; it’s hunting the Aether-cores in the ships' engines to neutralize the "poison" they emit.
- False: The Leviathan is a clockwork creation of the Sub-Terran Accord built to destroy the surface world's navy.
The Bile-Mutated Leviathan (Monster Details)
Tactics
The Leviathan uses the "Aether-Slick" to its advantage, hiding in the shimmering clouds of magic to gain total concealment. It begins combat by using its Grasping Tentacles to pull ships into the "Blue Bile" clouds, causing Wild Magic surges. It prioritizes targets wearing heavy metal armor or carrying Aether-powered devices. If bloodied, it attempts to retreat into the trench to regenerate, luring attackers into the crushing pressure of the depths.
Ecology
Originally a standard kraken-kin, the Leviathan was transformed when it nested near a rupture in the Deep-Strands. It now exists in a symbiotic relationship with the Omnisporangium. It filters raw Aether through its gills, converting it into Blue Bile which it periodically "exhales" to cool the tectonic plates. Without the Leviathan, the Aether-leak would cause a localized World-Fire, boiling the Broad Swells from the bottom up.
Encounters & Branching Paths
- The Tracking of the Wake (Survival): The party must navigate a sea of "Aether-Slick" debris. Failing checks leads to "Bile-Mutated" shark attacks or the ship’s engine stalling due to crystalline growth.
- The Harpoon Gambit (Combat/Challenge): Manning Captain Trench’s "Aether-Harpoons." The party must decide whether to aim for the heart (to kill) or the Aether-pouches (to disable and study).
- The Dragon’s Interference (Social/Combat): Xylira’s "Sea-Sprites" (fey creatures) attempt to clog the ship’s steam vents with fungal spores. Players must negotiate with Xylira or repel her guardians.
- Into the Maw (Combat): A climactic battle where the party boards the Leviathan's back to strike its "Crystallized Heart." Inside the beast, the air is thick with telepathic spores from the Omnisporangium, offering a vision of the planet’s true, fungal nature.
Narrative Outcomes & Loot
- Success (The Hunter’s Path): The Leviathan is slain. The Broad Swells are safe, but the water begins to turn a sickly, stagnant grey as the fungal blight begins to rise. Captain Trench gives the party the "Merchant’s Bounty."
- Success (The Guardian’s Path): The party helps Xylira relocate the Leviathan or seal the leak with a Sub-Terran Accord device. Trench is furious, but Xylira rewards the party with ancient treasures and the favor of the Emerald Dreamer.
- Failure: The party’s ship is sunk. They are rescued by Venda 'Sporelung' and taken to a subterranean enclave, realizing the world beneath is far larger than they imagined.
Items
Aether-Harpoon
- Lore & Origin: Forged in the foundries of Steamfort, these harpoons were designed by the Ironbeard Syndicate specifically to pierce the magically hardened hides of deep-sea monstrosities. Each tip is hollowed out to hold a neutralizing alchemical agent.
Aether-Leviathan Scale
- Lore & Origin: These shimmering, iridescent plates pulse with a faint violet light. They are not bone, but a fusion of chitin and crystallized magic. Blacksmiths of the Sub-Terran Accord use them to forge armor that can withstand the crushing pressures of the Veiled Cortex.
Abyssal Heart-Shard
- Lore & Origin: A fist-sized chunk of pure, solidified Aether found within the Leviathan’s primary ventricle. It hums with the low-frequency vibrations of the Omnisporangium’s own heartbeat. It is said that those who hold it can hear the world itself breathing.
