The Gilded Vein Incursion

The Gilded Vein Incursion
Location: The Iron-Wood Grove / The Shrouded Boughs Level Range: 7-9
Background & Objective
Deep within the Shrouded Boughs, where the ancient trees have absorbed centuries of raw magical runoff, the Gilded Vein Syndicate has launched a brazen industrial assault. Led by profit-hungry overseers, a massive force of mercenaries has established a base to clear-cut the Iron-Wood Grove—a vital ecological node in the world of Aethervale.
The operation took a catastrophic turn when their specialized, steam-powered "Crust-Breaker" saws punctured the forest floor, breaching a subterranean capillary of the Omnisporangium. This puncture has caused a localized collapse into a glowing, golden abyss, exposing the world's "nervous system." Now, the industrial scar is being reclaimed by a hive-mind of hyper-aggressive fungal constructs. Grand Warden Hekka, sensing the planet's distress through the Mycelial threads, seeks adventurers to infiltrate the base, sabotage the Syndicate’s logging engines, and hold back the fungal tide before the entire grove is swallowed by the abyss.
The Gimmick: Industrial Destruction
The syndicate base is a chaotic tangle of steam-pipes, grinding gears, and piles of iron-wood logs. Every round, on initiative count 20 (losing ties), there is a 10% chance of one of the following environmental hazards occurring:
- Steam-Burst: A ruptured pipe releases a cloud of scalding vapor. Creatures in a 15-foot radius must make a DC 13 Dexterity saving throw or take 2d6 fire damage.
- Log-Shift: The unstable ground causes heavy iron-wood logs to tumble. Creatures in a 20-foot line must succeed on a DC 13 Dexterity saving throw or be knocked prone and restrained (escape DC 13).
- Aether Seepage: Raw Aether leaks from the breach. Spells cast within 30 feet of the abyss trigger a roll on the Wild Magic Surge table.
Dramatis Personae
Grand Warden Hekka The stoic, moss-covered protector of the Iron-Wood Grove. Hekka is a Muridae elder who believes the Syndicate’s greed is a literal infection on the world’s skin.
"The earth does not scream in a voice you can hear, but look at the wilting leaves—it is weeping in amber."
Ideals & Flaws
- Ideal: Preservation. The cycle of the Omnisporangium must be protected at all costs, for if the planet dies, so do its children.
- Flaw: Inflexible. Hekka views all technology as a corruption, often refusing to use even beneficial tools if they are "unnatural."
Overseer "Brass-Lung" Varkas A high-level Saboteur from the Ironclad Vanguard, Varkas is a man of copper and soot. He views the Iron-Wood Grove as nothing more than unrefined capital.
"Keep those saws spinning! I don't care if the trees start bleeding gold—we have a quota to meet before the sun sets."
Ideals & Flaws
- Ideal: Innovation. Progress requires sacrifice; the world exists to be harnessed by the bold.
- Flaw: Greed. Varkas is secretly skimming Aether crystals from the Syndicate’s profits, making him paranoid of both his superiors and his subordinates.
Rumors & Whispers
- True: The breach in the grove has begun leaking Blue Bile, a caustic fungal waste that is rapidly mutating the local wildlife into shimmering, aggressive husks.
- False: The Gilded Vein Syndicate is actually a front for the Sub-Terran Accord, who are trying to reclaim the grove for the kobolds.
Sight, Sound, and Smell
- Sight: Pillars of black soot choking the vibrant green canopy; rhythmic, orange sparks flying from steam-saws; a terrifying, bioluminescent golden glow rising from the jagged hole in the earth.
- Sound: The relentless, rhythmic thumping of pneumatic pistons; the high-pitched shriek of saws meeting iron-hard wood; an underlying, low-frequency hum that vibrates in the marrow of one's bones.
- Smell: The sharp, metallic tang of hot copper and oil; the thick, cloying scent of fresh cedar mixed with the sweet, wine-like rot of fungal spores.
Markings
Scratched into the side of a rusted Syndicate steam-boiler is a series of jagged, interlocking triangles.
- Translation: "The earth is thin here. Do not sleep near the hum."
Tactical Combat & Challenges
The party must navigate three primary threats:
- Syndicate Sentinels: Mercenaries utilizing Aether-Suppression Field generators. These devices create a 20-foot aura that forces spellcasters to make a DC 14 Constitution saving throw to maintain concentration or cast spells above 3rd level.
- The Sabotage: To stop the excavation, players must interact with three Master Steam-Saws (AC 18, 50 HP). Disabling them requires a DC 16 Dexterity (Thieves' Tools) or Intelligence (Arcana) check, or brute force.
- Fungal-Infused Constructs: As the machines are sabotaged, "Spore-Goliaths"—animated amalgams of wood, gears, and fungal mass—emerge from the abyss to "cleanse" the area of all intruders.
Monsters: Spore-Goliaths (Fungal Constructs)
Ecology
Spore-Goliaths are an "Industrial Immune Response" triggered by the Omnisporangium. When the planet's crust is damaged by heavy machinery, the fungal network sends necrotic spores to "infect" the metal and wood, turning the tools of destruction into guardians of the deep. They do not eat; they break down artificial structures into organic mulch.
Tactics
Spore-Goliaths prioritize targets wearing heavy metal armor or wielding clockwork devices. They use their Fungal Pulse to clog gears and corrode metal, and they explode into a cloud of debilitating spores when destroyed, attempting to drag their "pollutants" (the players) down into the abyss with them.
Narrative Outcomes & Loot
Success ensures the safety of the Iron-Wood Grove and stalls the Syndicate's expansion. However, the breach remains a scar on the world, revealing to the players that the mainland—and perhaps Aurelius the Golden—is hunting for the heart of the world itself.
Items: Lore & Origin
- Lore: Forged from the sap-heavy heartwood of a tree that survived a lightning strike, these harpoons were originally designed by Muridae hunters to bring down massive forest-striders.
- Origin: Crafted by the Circle of the Thorn, these weapons are magically weighted to seek out the seams in metal armor.
Aether-Meter
- Lore: A delicate brass instrument filled with suspended Blue Bile. The bile glows brighter as it nears high concentrations of raw magic.
- Origin: A stolen prototype from the Steam Wrights Consortium, used by the Syndicate to sniff out buried Aether deposits.
Steam-Powered Grappling Hook
- Lore: A marvel of miniaturized steam-tech, this device uses a pressurized canister to fire a titanium claw up to 60 feet.
- Origin: Standard issue for the Ironclad Vanguard, though this specific model has been modified with "silent-hiss" valves for infiltration.
