The Core Meltdown

The Core Meltdown
Location: Steamfort, The Rusted Deep
Level Range: 9-12
Background & Objective
The central Steam-Core of Steamfort, the crown jewel of the Steam Wrights Consortium, is suffering a catastrophic pressure breach. This is no mere mechanical failure; the core’s primary Aether-injection manifold has been destabilized by the planetary immune response of the Omnisporangium. The facility, which has spent decades parasitically draining the local leylines, now faces a localized "World-Fire" event.
As the thermal regulators fail, the core’s internal pressure has spiked beyond the threshold of a standard mechanical shutdown. The chamber has become a "localized sun," radiating lethal Aetheric energy. To avert the total vaporization of Steamfort, the party must execute a two-stage emergency protocol: first, a complex manual shutdown sequence to decouple the primary vents, and second, the injection of raw Blue Bile—a volatile, caustic coolant harvested from the subterranean Mycelium—to chemically neutralize the Aether before the containment hull ruptures.
High-Artificer Silas Pendergast
"The brass must hold, or the sky will burn blue. This isn't just physics anymore, travelers—the very earth is trying to vomit us out. Now, turn the damn valve!"
Ideals & Flaws
- Ideal: Innovation. "Through gears and Aether, we shall build a world that never sleeps."
- Flaw: Hubris. Silas refuses to acknowledge that Steamfort’s engines are causing the tectonic instability of the Rusted Deep.
Rumors & Whispers
- True: The "malfunction" was triggered when a Spore-Goliath managed to lodge a necro-mycological growth directly into the manifold, forcing the Aether to feedback into the core.
- False: The Sub-Terran Accord has replaced the facility's coolant with pure Blue Bile to intentionally dissolve the city's foundations.
The Gimmick: Nuclear Winter
The destabilized Aether creates a phenomenon known as Nuclear Winter. Despite the core's intense heat, the local reality begins to fray, causing "Aether-frost" to crystallize in the air. This shimmering, radioactive sleet obscures vision and leaches the life force from living creatures while supercharging arcane constructs.
Sight, Sound, and Smell
- Sight: Blinding incandescent white light bleeding through brass seams; gears glowing cherry-red against a backdrop of swirling, sapphire-colored frost.
- Sound: The deafening, rhythmic scream of escaping high-pressure steam; the deep, tectonic groan of warping iron supports.
- Smell: Sharp ozone, scorched copper, and the heavy, sickly-sweet scent of fermenting mushrooms rising from the lower vents.
Tactical Combat & Challenges
- Aetheric Radiation: While inside the core chamber, creatures take 2d10 Fire and 2d10 Radiant damage at the start of each turn.
- The Sentinels: Steamfort’s Iron Golems have been haywire. They are immune to the core's radiation and instead regain 20 hit points at the start of their turns if they are within 30 feet of the core.
- Spore-Goliath Incursion: Halfway through the shutdown, a Spore-Goliath (a necro-mycological siege engine) will breach the outer wall, attempting to accelerate the meltdown to "surgically" remove the facility from the leyline.
- The Two-Stage Protocol:
- Manual Shutdown: Requires three successful DC 18 Intelligence (Investigation) or Strength (Athletics) checks to manually crank the pressure-release wheels.
- Bile Injection: Players must transport canisters of pressurized Blue Bile (hazardous to touch) across the shifting catwalks and successfully connect them to the manifold using a DC 20 Dexterity (Sleight of Hand) or Thieves' Tools check.
Markings & Warnings
Scratched into the brass bulkheads near the core's entrance is a recurring symbol: a gear being split by a mushroom stalk.
- Translation: "The earth is reclaiming this steel."
Monsters: Iron Golems & Spore-Goliaths
Tactics
Iron Golems act as meat shields for the manifold, using their Slam attacks to knock players away from the shutdown valves. The Spore-Goliaths, however, ignore the players, focusing their Siege Monster trait on destroying the Blue Bile canisters and the manifold itself to ensure the meltdown completes.
Ecology
The Iron Golems are products of the Steam Wrights' peak artifice, fueled by refined Aether. In contrast, the Spore-Goliaths are "grown" by the Omnisporangium from the remains of fallen miners and reclaimed machinery, acting as a biological siege force designed to dismantle artificial structures.
Narrative Outcomes & Loot
If successful, the party saves Steamfort and earns a massive political debt from the Steam Wrights Consortium. However, the use of Blue Bile to stabilize the core has a side effect: the facility's machinery begins to "bloom" with bioluminescent fungi, and the city’s steam now carries the telepathic whispers of the Omnisporangium.
The Core-Siphon Lens
Wondrous Item, Very Rare (Requires Attunement)
- Lore & Origin: Forged from a fragment of the core’s housing that survived the meltdown, this lens is stained deep sapphire by Blue Bile exposure. It was once part of the manifold that regulated the world's stolen lifeblood.
- Properties: This lens allows the user to cast Sickening Radiance once per long rest. Additionally, the wearer can see Aetheric currents, gaining advantage on checks made to track magical creatures or identify leylines.
Rumors & Whispers (Item)
- True: The lens allows the wearer to hear the "heartbeat" of the Omnisporangium when standing on bare earth.
- False: Looking through the lens for too long will turn the wearer’s eyes into solid Aether crystals.
