The Whispering Moss Legends

The Whispering Moss Legends
The Whispering Moss, also known as Singing-Moss, is more than just a bioluminescent plant to the Muridae of The Shrouded Boughs. It is the subject of countless legends and myths that shape the Mousefolk's understanding of their history and their connection to the Mother-Tree.
The Voices of the Ancestors
The most common legend is that the moss captures the whispers of every Muridae who has ever lived in the forest. It is believed that when a mouse dies, their final thoughts and words are absorbed by the roots and then "replayed" by the moss in the Echoing Grotto or the Whispering Roots. This makes the moss a sacred medium for communicating with the past, and many seers spend their entire lives "listening" to the moss to gather ancestral wisdom.
The Moss-Children
Another popular tale is that of the "Moss-Children"—small, spectral manifestations that are said to appear in areas where the singing-moss is particularly dense. These children are believed to be the playful spirits of the forest, guiding lost Muridae sailors back to Drift-Haven or warning rangers of incoming predators. While few claim to have seen them directly, their high-pitched, melodic laughter is a common sound in the deeper sections of the root-labyrinth.
The Warning of the Dissonance
Not all moss-legends are peaceful. The "Warning of the Dissonance" tells of a time when a great evil entered the forest and attempted to "silence" the Mother-Tree. In response, the singing-moss began to vibrate with such a terrifying, discordant screech that it caused the branches of the tree to shatter and the magical mist to turn black. This legend serves as a warning against the hubris of the "Tall Races" and the dangers of disrupting the forest's natural harmony.
Modern Practice
The moss is a vital part of modern Muridae life. Its vibrations are used by wrights to "tune" their equipment, by seers to gather omens, and by parents to soothe their children to sleep with "Moss-Lullabies." The preservation of the moss is a top priority for the Mist-Weaver Coven, who view its health as a direct reflection of the forest's spiritual well-being.
