The Realms of the Afterlife: The Aetheric Tides

The afterlife in Aethervale is not a single destination but a series of "Concentric Spheres" that a soul traverses as it moves away from the material world. This journey is known as The Final Drift.

1. The Shallows (The Ethereal Border)

The closest realm to the living world. It is a mirrored version of Aethervale, shrouded in an eternal, grey mist.

  • The Inhabitants: Ghosts, specters, and those who refused to let go. They can see the living world but cannot touch it.
  • The Danger: The "Aetheric Predators"—entities that have evolved to hunt unanchored souls.

2. The Sea of Whispers (The Transitional Layer)

As a soul moves deeper, the physical world fades entirely, replaced by a vast, glowing ocean of liquid Aether.

  • The Cleansing: This is where the "Mantle" (the ego and memories) begins to dissolve. The souls hear the collective whispers of every life ever lived.
  • The Ferrymen: Mysterious Aetheric constructs (some say created by Saint Kaelen) that guide souls toward their respective celestial domains.

3. The Celestial Domains (The Saintly Halls)

For those who followed the path of the Seven Saints, their journey often ends (temporarily) in one of the seven domains described in the Pantheon Expanded.

  • Purpose: These realms serve as "Refineries." A soul of a warrior might spend centuries in Orik’s Bastion, honing its essence before being deemed ready for reincarnation.
  • The Reward: A state of "Purposeful Rest" where the soul is aligned with the divine will of its patron Saint.

4. The Maw (The Abyssal Rim)

For the wicked, the treacherous, and those who bargained with the Ancient Deities, the Drift pulls them downward toward the Rim.

  • The Punishment: It is not a lake of fire, but a "Void of sensory deprivation." The soul is slowly picked apart by the Ancient Deities, its energy consumed to fuel their eternal hunger.
  • The Lost: Those who fall into the Maw are said to be "Truly Deleted"—their Core is destroyed, and they can never be reincarnated.

5. The Core (The Well of Souls)

At the very center of the Aetheric Tides lies the Core. This is the source of all life in Aethervale.

  • The Rebirth: Once a soul is fully "Cleaned" and "Recharged," it is pulled into the Core. It loses all individuality and becomes a pure "Aetheric Seed," ready to be sent back into a new body.
  • The Mystery: No one, not even the most powerful mages or priests, knows what truly happens inside the Core. It is the one secret the Seven Saints refuse to reveal.

The Breach: The Way Back

Rarely, a soul can move against the Tides. This is the path taken by those who are resurrected or by powerful necromancers seeking to "Plunder the Sea of Whispers." Every such breach weakens the barrier between the worlds, leading to the formation of "Grave-Nodes"—places where the dead can easily cross over.
