Battle of the Shattered Plains

Battle of the Shattered Plains

Battle of the Shattered Plains (218 AW)

Overview

The Battle of the Shattered Plains, fought in the year 218 After the Ward (AW), stands as a defining military engagement that halted the expansionist ambitions of the Arcane Ascendancy and cemented the legacy of Commander Vane. It was on these cracked, magic-scorched badlands that a desperate coalition of free settlements decisively broke the back of the Ascendancy's battle-mage legions.

The Conflict

The Arcane Ascendancy, seeking to consolidate power and monopolize magical resources across the central territories, marched a highly disciplined army of construct-golems and war-wizards into the independent lands. Commander Vane, a brilliant tactician and charismatic leader, rallied a ragtag force of mercenaries, local militia, and disillusioned mages to meet them on the Shattered Plains—a region notorious for its unstable magic fields.

Vane utilized the terrain masterfully. Knowing his forces could not match the Ascendancy in a direct arcane barrage, he lured their heavy constructs into areas of high arcane resonance, causing catastrophic magical misfires. Vane's forces engaged in brutal, close-quarters combat, neutralizing the Ascendancy mages before they could cast their most devastating spells.

The Crimson Company

The victory was absolute, but the cost was staggering. The blood spilled on the plains that day gave rise to a new military order. From the hardened veterans of the battle, Commander Vane forged the Crimson Company.

Named in honor of the blood shed by their comrades, the Crimson Company evolved into the most elite and feared mercenary organization in Aethervale. The battle not only secured the independence of the central territories but also established a new balance of power, proving that tactical brilliance and iron will could overcome even the most entrenched magical supremacy.
